Applications are invited to apply for a Ophthalmology Consultant - Specialist Interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will become part of a team of 6 other Consultant Ophthalmologists, 5 middle grade/training doctors and an exceptional team of allied health professionals. The applicant will be required to be experienced in the management of Paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, retinopathy of prematurity ward rounds, general and acute ophthalmic conditions.

He/she will be expected to actively participate in audit projects and contribute to the Paediatric Ophthalmology Service including the development of nursing and allied health professionals in extended roles.

The eye department serves Milton Keynes and the immediate surrounding areas consisting of a modern outpatient and day case surgery unit. This happy and self-contained unit is situated within the hospital campus with easy access, onsite parking and nearby railway links.

Fast Trains from Milton Keynes central to London Euston are regular, with a journey time of under 40 minutes.

Consultant Ophthalmologist with interest in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus

Job Outline

The appointee will be expected to participate in commitments along with Consultant colleagues to provide full Clinical Services in Ophthalmology and participate in Medical Audit.

The post holder will work with colleagues to provide a comprehensive and co-ordinated Ophthalmology service across the Trust and will join with fellow consultants in running the service.

The post holder will be expected to attend clinical meetings and to take part in continual medical activities in line with Royal College guidelines. The Trust runs regular meetings with GP’s, and the post holder will be encouraged to participate in these activities.

Study leave for Continuing Medical Education is available as provided for under the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental staff.

The post holder will support the delivery of the National Health Service Plan, which includes Direct and Partial Booking of Outpatients, and the introduction of Booked Admissions within Ophthalmology Day Surgery

Individual Job Plan

Post: Consultant Ophthalmologist - with special interest in Paediatric and Strabismus.

MKUH has university hospital status and we are a teaching unit with trainees. The post holder will be expected to take an active part in training and participate in the weekly and monthly teaching program. Post holder may be expected to work across sites and participate in an on call service.

The job plan will be for a maximum 10 session week including the below:

2 Paediatric clinics
  1. 5 Theatre Session (1-2 monthly high flow cataract list)

1 Virtual clinic

1 ROP ward round
  1. 5 Adult Strabismus
  2. 5 Non-core SPA (Roles Paed Ophthalmology Lead / Audit Lead and ES Supervisor)
  3. 0 Core SPA
  4. 5 Electronic Triage

The final job plan will be subject to change depending on service developments in the future but will be done only after discussion.

The job plan on appointment will consist of a split of 7.5:2.5 DCC/SPA. The SPA component is made up of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings etc.) and non-core activities. Non-core activities are discussed and agreed within the Trust (via an agreed tariff and, on occasion, through ad personal agreement).
Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. Following appointment, non-core SPA may be used to participate in our consultant development programme, or in acquiring or consolidating specific skills and expertise.

Non-core SPA is only available if specific activities and objectives are mutually agreed in job planning.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Be on the GMC specialist register for Ophthalmology
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Experience in Retina sub-speciality training (12 months or more)
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree
  • Experience in Ophthalmic Primary Care/Eye Casualty
  • Clinical research experience
  • Up to date sub-specialty fellowship (Retina)
  • Experience in Delivering a Virtual Retina Service
  • Experience in delivering a NHS Retina Service

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • High level of clinical experience and competence in Ophthalmology
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
Desirable criteria
  • A commitment to, and experience of developing and managing a Medical Retina Service
  • Practicing Cataract Surgeon
