Main duties of the job
The Dermatology department at University Hospital Southampton is a busy self-contained outpatient department in a large university teaching hospital. You will join an existing team of 19 consultants. Southampton is one of three recognised specialist centres for treating skin cancer within the Central South Coast Cancer Network and within that it is the recognised melanoma centre with access to major melanoma trials.Skin cancer forms a large amount of our workload. MOHS micrographic surgery is performed at UHS and the department has a number of other specialist services. We have very well established links with the academic department at University of Southampton and excellent facilities for research are in place.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
What you’ll do
This post in Dermatology will be based at Royal South Hants Hospital, with some sessions possibly based in Southampton General Hospital and/or peripheral hospitals or other sites of health care provision. The focus of this post is to provide comprehensive specialist outpatient services in dermatology and in addition could include services for a subspecialty in medical or surgical dermatology.
The appointee will be expected to attend the department's meetings including departmental and consultant meeting, Clinical Governance meeting and Skin MDT.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative candidate who will further support our well established team and facilitate the development of new specialist services.
Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person specification
Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria- Hold a medical qualification or qualification registered with the GMC
- Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. MRCP/MRCS or equivalent
- High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty
- Experience in the management of skin cancer and cutaneous surgery
- All round experience in General Dermatology
- Evidence of Audit/Research
- Has attended a recognised management training event or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
- Supervision of post graduate trainees and junior doctors
- Personal time management skills
- Evidence of Clinical Governance
- Ability to organise in patient and out-patient waiting lists
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Ability to contribute to change management
- Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
- Ability to critically review research
- MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research
- Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent
- Interest in the field of skin cancer and dermatological surgery or other specific interest in a medical subspecialty of dermatology
- Familiarity within issues of service organisation and development
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/postgraduates
- Experience of teaching Lay groups and other staff groups
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
- Publications in peer review journals
