This advert is for 2 full time 12 month fixed term post as a Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+ equivalent) level in General Surgery at Epsom & St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of surgical areas with exposure to theatres and outpatient clinics.

This post would be suitable for a candidate in the process of applying for national selection for a training post or for a more experienced surgeon looking for a post in a thriving department.

Possession of MRCS or equivalent and full registration with the GMC is essential.

This post provides ample training opportunities in General Surgery, and you will be expected to take an active part in audit, research and teaching.

The post holder will be working with Consultant-led teams and will be responsible for the management of acute admissions. They will have opportunity to regularly assist in emergency surgical procedures during their on call commitments. The post holder will participate on the Middle Grade General Surgery 1:11 on call rota.

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large acute Trust serving South West London and Surrey. It comprises two Acute Hospitals: Epsom General Hospital and St Helier Hospital; Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children; Elective Orthopaedic Hospital (EOC) and a Private Patient Unit.

There is a tertiary Renal Unit serving South West London, Surrey and parts of Hampshire. Our hospitals are busy and dynamic and the specialties offered are led by keen and enthusiastic consultants.

  • Day to day management of surgical inpatients.
  • Assisting consultants in the outpatient clinics and operating theatres.
  • Participation in the Middle Grade on call rota and to provide cover in exceptional circumstances for colleagues’ absence.
  • Assessment, care and treatment of patients presenting to the specialty and referred to the speciality.
  • Attending clinics and assessing patients and formulating treatment decisions seeking advice from the consultant as appropriate.
  • Attending operating sessions with the consultant and assisting or performing operations as appropriate.
  • Conducting daily inpatient ward rounds under the consultant’s care, supervising the junior doctors in the care of these patients.
  • Teaching and training staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate.
  • Communication with other team members as appropriate.
