Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon | The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our existing team of 11 Consultants and 1 SAS doctor here at the Freeman Hospital, providing Vascular Surgery services to a population of approximately 1.2 million people across the Newcastle and Gateshead region and spoke services across Northumbria.
You will provide an expert opinion on, and investigate and manage, those patients presenting to the Department of Vascular Surgery in Newcastle. You will be contributing to the management, development and delivery of the vascular service and will be responsible for patient care within this department.
Management of vascular patients will involve open, endovascular and modern endovenous techniques, involving close MDT team working to ensure the best outcomes possible for the people of the North East of England referred for a vascular opinion.
You will be expected to lead and develop your sub-specialty interest to further enhance the delivery of the vascular service and it is favourable if the successful candidate has a track record of service innovation.

Primarily you will be contributing to the management, delivery and development of the Vascular service in Newcastle Hospitals and surrounding trusts. You will be responsible for patient care within this department. As a nationally recognised centre of vascular excellence in the UK, we would expect the successful candidate to lead and develop a subspecialty area, to continue to enhance the national profile of Newcastle Hospitals.We anticipate that successful candidates will have the necessary skills to drive forward our hybrid theatre endovascular capability and the delivery of first-class vascular care. Successful candidates will be given the opportunity to take on leading roles in education and/or clinical governance.
We expect the successful candidate to be an innovator, with exceptional leadership skills, a track record of successful collaboration and team working, together with a proven ability to deliver service innovation and quality improvement.
You will participate in a 1:9 weekend & 1:11 week-based Consultant-of-the-Week and Surgeon-of-the Week rota, enabling frontline senior decision making and supporting patient flow.

Management and Leadership:- To lead in a specific clinical area of vascular surgery and contribute at national level.
- To actively contribute to the general organisation and running of vascular services within the Trust, working in collaboration with colleagues.
- To effectively manage clinics/theatre lists.
- To lead the delivery of vascular and endovascular services to neighbouring trusts.
- To establish office-based varicose vein intervention in neighbouring trusts.
- To ensure that patient safety, quality and clinical governance are promoted and developed within the vascular service to ensure the highest possible standard of healthcare and sharing of lessons learned.
- To co-ordinate clinical audit relevant to the vascular service, with particular attention to NICE guidance, NCEPOD, CQUIN targets and the Vascular Registry annual reports.
- To assist the Surgical Services Director of Operations and Clinical Director in the timely investigation of complaints, working to provide reports within the timeframe set out by Trust policy.
- Undertake effective patient-based administration duties in relation to the care of your patients and the delivery of the vascular service.
- General administrative duties to achieve departmental, directorate and trust strategic aims and objectives.
- Clinical governance administration necessary to deliver safe, high quality care with efficient use of resources.
- Become involved with the financial management of the department – at all times looking to ensure the delivery of high quality care to agreed standards but, at the same time, reviewing working practices to provide the most efficient use of resources.
- To efficiently utilise theatre lists.
- To efficiently manage your weekly diary, including on-call provisions, taking into account service demands and working closely with colleagues to achieve this.
- To build efficient working relationships with administrative and secretarial team.
- To work with the department to achieve effective management pathways for carotid, aortic aneurysm, and chronic limb threatening ischaemia patients, as well as patients with superficial and deep venous disease.
- To collaborate with academic institutions to further establish the research profile of the department.
- To continue research activity and publish clinical research, contributing to the national vascular community.
- To contribute to departmental/clinical board/trust-level vascular innovations and to personally lead quality improvement projects.
- The successful candidate will have a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and will be expected to encourage research as a high profile activity that compliments the high quality vascular service provided.
- To contribute to the teaching and training of all grades of juniors, including supporting the Foundation junior doctor team, core training and and specialty trainees. This includes the delivery of teaching in both informal and formal settings (eg the Newcastle Surgical Training Centre, NSTC).
- Participate in the teaching and clinical supervision of undergraduate medical students from the University of Newcastle in all parts of the course, but specifically in the investigation and management of vascular conditions.
- To reflect on feedback to maintain the high educational standards expected of the Trust and HENE.
- To understand and clearly demonstrate the professional behaviours required of a dedicated educational/clinical supervisor.
- Participate in the teaching and training of other other allied health care professionals (e.g. Physician Associates, Surgical Care Practitioners, Specialist Nurses and Nurse Practitioners) within the Clinical Board.
