An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Pre-Registration optometrist to join the optometry unit for a 12 months fixed term starting from July 2025.

The department of ophthalmology is a busy and well equipped service.

The optometry unit provides pre-reg optometrists with broad experience in many areas of clinical optometry including refraction, contact lenses and low vision clinics.

Experience in general optometric practice is gained outside the hospital in a community practice. Specialist ophthalmology clinics, orthoptics, eye casualty and operating departments are readily accessible. There will be opportunities for regular observation in outpatient clinics and eye casualty with medical staff.
  • To undertake, under approved supervision, core optometric clinical work including refraction, contact lens and low vision clinics.
  • To participate in a programme for the development of personal clinical development, in accordance with individual performance objectives which are agreed with the Clinical Lead Optometrist.
  • To formulate individualised management and treatment plans in discussion with the registered supervisor and make onward referral to other clinical members of the Ophthalmology Department.
  • To implement management plans and a wide range of treatment regimes in conjunction with the registered supervisor communicating with patients, relatives and carers including those with learning, communication and language difficulties.
  • To frequently communicate sensitive issues to patients including diagnosis and prognosis and provide a counselling and support role to patient, relative or carer.
  • To take responsibility for routine administrative activities within the Optometry Unit as delegated by more senior members of staff

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:
  • high-quality care for all,
  • being a great place to work,
  • partnerships for impact, and
  • research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
  • we are compassionate,
  • we are proud,
  • we are inclusive, and
  • we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
