We are pleased to invite applications for a permanent position of Head of Medical Physics to provide management and scientific leadership to the Department of Medical Physics at the Royal Surrey Cancer Centre in Guildford.

We also deliver a full range of diagnostic nuclear medicine tests to both adult and paediatric patients, as well as providing a comprehensive Molecular Radiotherapy service (including I-131 for benign and malignant thyroid disease). Our radiation protection and scientific computing departments also provide nationally recognised services.

The cathedral city of Guildford offers excellent leisure, cultural and sporting facilities, is close to the stunning Surrey countryside, and is only 40 minutes by train to London.

Main duties of the job

As the Head of Medical Physics the successful candidate will lead the teams across Radiotherapy Physics, the Regional Radiation Protection Service, Nuclear Medicine, Scientific Computing Services and the National Co-ordinating Centre for the Physics of Mammography (NCCPM) on behalf of Public Health England.

Ensuring that effective services are provided and to develop these services both scientifically and technically in response to changes in clinical workload and practice, equipment development and statutory requirements, along with initiating and undertaking research and development in the above fields.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide management and scientific leadership to the Department of Medical Physics incorporating Radiotherapy Physics, the Regional Radiation Protection Service, Nuclear Medicine, Scientific Computing Services and the National Coordinating Centre for the Physics of Mammography on behalf of NHS Breast Screening Programme.

To ensure that effective services are provided and to develop these services both scientifically and technically in response to changes in clinical workload and practice, equipment development and statutory requirements. To initiate and undertake research and development in the above fields commensurate with the achievement of clinical objectives.

To formulate and manage significant pay budget, non-pay budget and non-commissioned income target arising from the provision of expert medical physics services to a large number of external NHS and private healthcare providers. In addition to manage associated R&D cost centre budgets and staff arising from grant income and a Medical Physics Trainee budget.

To be part of the management team of the Oncology Division. To provide leadership to the Royal Surrey Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where scientific and technical matters are concerned.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 1st or upper 2nd class honours degree in physics or relevant scientific or engineering subject
  • MSc in medical physics [or equivalent]
  • PhD in medical physics [or equivalent]
  • HCPC registration as a clinical scientist
  • Registered for Continuing Professional Development
  • Registered as a Medical Physics Expert (MPE)
Desirable criteria
  • Managerial Qualification e.g. Professional Certificate in management
  • Fellowship of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine [or equivalent] or be eligible to apply
  • Registered as a Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) and / or Radioactive Waste Advisor (RWA)

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in all areas of medical physics
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of at least one area of medical physics
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and deep understanding of the benefits and risks of using radiation.
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and deep understanding of the nature, use, risks and radiation protection of ionising radiations.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of all the areas of legislation, approved codes and good guidance, applicable to the medical use of ionising radiation
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge to act as a Medical Physics Expert regarding the safety of the patient under IR(ME)R within the field of at least one area of medical physics
  • Ability to teach, explain and examine complex scientific subjects
  • Proven research ability and ability to identify, design and complete research projects
  • Understanding of Quality Management Systems
  • Good understanding of NHS organisations, Trust management and procedures and strategic planning
  • Experience of managing a large highly qualified and skilled team in a number of clinical areas and dealing with their HR issues
  • Experience of financial management and contracts
  • Project management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of providing and operating a scientific service over a number of hospital sites or a large geographical area
  • Formal project management training e.g PRINCE2
