Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic Band 5 Staff Nurse to join any of our friendly haematology ward at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH), on a full-time permanent basis. The ward is a 16 bedded unit that consists of all side room's.

The ward care for patients with a variety of malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders and Sickle cell and Thalassemia conditions. The department works with a team of specialist consultants, nurses and AHPs who collectively provide a comprehensive service covering diagnosis, treatment, symptom control management, and end of life care.

We strive to deliver the highest quality of care to all patients and always strive to put the patients first. You will need to be a registered nurse and ideally demonstrate previous Oncology/Haematology experience, evidence of the administration of IV medications and chemotherapy (SACT passport) is desired.

Intravenous cannulation and venepuncture are also desirable, however full training will be given.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have excellent opportunities for professional and personal development in a well-resourced environment, with support from the wards Heamatology senior staff. We will support and encourage you to achieve your potential as a nurse.

You will need to have the ability to plan, document, deliver and evaluate evidence-based nursing care for patients in a responsible and efficient way, which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift lead and the daily running of a busy Haematology ward.

To develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities administered within the Ward.

To develop an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of managing a shift with the guidance of the Ward Sister/Charge Nurse.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Collaboratively working for day to day running of a busy Haematology ward.

To ensure that all nursing procedures are carried out in accordance with Midland Metropolitan University Hospital NHS Trust policies taking appropriate action in emergency situations.

In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, be responsible for setting, monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of care particularly for patients with multiple needs who require complex packages of care.

Maintaining personal contact with patients, relatives and carers, being sensitive to their needs for courtesy, dignity and privacy and ensuring a friendly environment at all times.

Delivering care needs and maintaining patient and staff safety on the ward and escalating where appropriate.
