This post will be working across the city-wide special school nursing service implementing and delivering specialist nursing care in a special school environment. The successful candidate will be required to carry out assessments; provide both planned and responsive clinical care and ensure that local safeguarding policies are adhered to.
They will be identified as a role model for the Band 5 Special School Nurses and Enteral Feeding Assistants and will also support education staff and offer advice and support to parents and pupils.
We would welcome applications from enthusiastic committed children’s nurses with proven clinical experience who have excellent communication skills and are able to manage their time effectively.
An understanding of the needs of children and young people with disability and/or additional health problems is essential.
Main duties of the job
The Special School Nurse will work as part of a team to provide, protect and improve the health and wellbeing of children with a range of health needs in achieving their full health and educational potential.
The post holder will be responsible for a caseload and will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and have continuing responsibility for both direct nursing care and training to health and educational staff on the management of nursing issues.The post holder will work in partnership with the Doctor and Therapy Team in assessing, reviewing and meeting the needs of children and young people.

- assessment and review
- hands on clinical care
- key worker and signposting including transition
- training and supervision, and
- a general role in optimising long term health and lifestyles
Responsible for -
To have management responsibility of junior team members (e.g. Band 3 and Band 5) supported by Band 7 and be activity engaged in supervision of student nurse placements.
Supporting the Team Leader with their management responsibility of the Band 5 nurses, Health Care Assistants, Admin and Clerical staff in their immediate locality.

Qualifications / training
Essential criteria- Registered Children’s Nurse/Registered Learning Disability Nurse
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
- A Specialist Public Health or Community Nursing Qualification would be desirable but not essential
Experience
Essential criteria- Evidence of multi-disciplinary working.
- Experience of working with children with complex health and social needs.
- Post registration community experience.
Skills/knowledge
Essential criteria- Demonstrate ability to manage caseload/workload and associated resources.
- Ability to delegate work appropriately.
- Evidence of assessment skills and ability to manage a range of care plans.
- Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of current legislative changes effecting the NHS and Social Services particularly those affecting primary care.
- Ability to teach relatives, clients and staff across relevant areas of self-care and appropriate nursing practice.
- Ability to demonstrate written skills that area relevant, accurate and concise.
