There is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic proactive individual to join our Clinical Skills Training Team as a Senior Clinical Skills Trainer.

The Clinical Skills Training Team within The Christie Institute for Cancer Education provides effective generic clinical skills training and support for a range of Nursing and Allied Health Professionals, Healthcare Support Workers and students.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual who will assist in moving the service forward, focusing on developing and maintaining standards and upholding trust protocols and guidelines in relation to clinical skills and systemic anti-cancer therapy training and competency assessments.

The successful candidate will need to lead and coordinate the operational and day to day work of the clinical skills training service in designated clinical areas working closely with Departmental Managers, Clinical Educators, Specialist Practice Educatos (SACT), clinical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

They will also have to work as part of a team to deliver planned generic clinical skills and SACT training sessions, provide a trust wide Alertive bleep service and cross cover clinical skills and SACT training in other designated clinical areas during absence.

Also the successful candidate, in designated clinical areas, will monitor and supervise The Christie Care Certificate, Preceptorship and medical devices training processes alongside specific Leads for new staff.

Main duties of the job
  1. Develop and deliver clinical skills and SACT training to agreed standards, procedures and policies to a range of internal and external clinical staff across professions. This may be to small or large groups and or on a 1:1 basis.
  2. Evaluate and adapt delivery of training dependent upon assessment of current level of knowledge, skills and experience of the learner.
  3. Assess the practical clinical skills competencies of individual clinical staff to established competency assessment frameworks. Feedback areas of concern to senior colleagues and/or departmental managers.
  4. Devise, develop and review training materials, presentations and input/comment on policy updates under the direction of the Clinical Skills Training Manager.
  5. Maintain and develop own knowledge, skills and competence in relation to clinical practice, clinical skills and SACT training.
  6. Contribute to the implementation of new clinical skills training initiatives, ensuring practice is evidence based and adheres to trust standards and policies.
  7. Participate in evaluating clinical skills training provision and identifying skills gaps to ensure continued improvements, quality and standardisation of training.
  8. Prioritise, plan and coordinate the delivery of the operational work of the team. Liaise with the Clinical Skills Training Manager to ensure that operational work issues are addressed and to assist in informing overall strategic delivery of the service and priorities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

PROFESSIONAL/COMMUNICATION
  1. Demonstrate a pleasant, approachable and proactive manner to create and promote a good working relationship amongst the Clinical Skills Training Team, within The Christie Institute for Cancer Education and the clinical divisions.
  2. Adhere to uniform policy to maintain a professional appearance.
  3. Work autonomously managing own workload in designated clinical areas.
  4. Work as part of the team to deliver static training sessions and provision of trust wide Alertive bleep service and cross cover during absence.
  5. Prioritise, plan and coordinate the delivery of the operational work of the team. Liaise with the Clinical Skills Training Manager to ensure that operational work issues are addressed and to assist in informing overall strategic delivery of the service and priorities.
  6. Be responsible for liaising with managers and or Clinical Educators in designated clinical areas to assess needs and monitor competencies.
  7. Feedback to the managing clinical skills training team members ensuring the appropriate operational service cover arrangements are in place e.g., during sickness or annual leave and be adaptable to ensure that the overall work of the team is carried out effectively.
  8. Attend and actively participate in departmental and Trust committees, providing reports and information relating to the work of the clinical skills training team and feedback to managing clinical skills training team members.
  9. Be aware of own limitations and that of others, seeking advice and guidance as required.
  10. Act as a specialist resource/support for the Trust in relation to clinical skills training, Healthcare Support Worker developments, preceptorship and medical devices training processes and liaise with the managing clinical skills team and/or multi disciplinary team as appropriate.
  11. Demonstrate effective written, verbal and nonverbal communication skills, with team colleagues, staff in designated clinical areas and other staff trustwide and externally, at all levels on a range of matters relating to clinical skills training provision and developments.
  12. Manage difficult conversations with staff in designated clinical areas maintaining confidentiality at all times and escalate to senior colleagues as appropriate.
  13. Demonstrate effective use of Microsoft word, excel and outlook IT packages – adhering to trust and IT governance policies at all times.
  14. Demonstrate a professional and keen interest in the overall work of The Christie Institute for Cancer Education.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  1. Be accountable to Clinical Skills Training Manager for identifying training gaps, raising areas of priority, and develop and deliver clinical skills training programmes and supporting documents and policies to a range of clinical staff across professions, in large/smalls groups and/or on a 1:1 basis.
  2. Implement and oversee in collaboration with the Clinical Skills Training Manager and clinical managers an effective Healthcare Support Worker development programme in designated clinical areas.
  3. Supervise and monitor in collaboration with the Clinical Skills Training Manager the preceptorship and medical devices training processes in designated clinical areas.
  4. Adapt delivery of training dependent upon assessment of current level of knowledge, skills and experience of the learner.
  5. Devise, develop and review training materials, presentations and policies under the direction of the Clinical Skills Training Manager.
  6. Maintain and develop own knowledge, skills and competence in relation to clinical practice and clinical skills training. Proactively engage in annual appraisal with line manager.

SERVICE IMPROVEMENT AND QUALITY
  1. Be accountable to the Clinical Skills Training Manager when leading on the design, operational collation of data, evaluation, report writing and presentation of results for audits relevant to the work of the Clinical Skills Training Team.
  2. Be responsible to the Clinical Skills Team Manager when handling the investigation of clinical incidents relevant to the work of the Clinical Skills Training Team.
  3. Lead collating and maintaining training and development records in designated clinical areas.
  4. Be accountable to the Clinical Skills Training Manager to identify, devise, develop and implement new clinical skills training initiatives and educational pathways, ensuring practice is evidence based and adheres to trust standards and policies.
  5. With team establish competency standards to ensure the agreed standard of care is maintained.
  6. Supervise the professional work of staff and students requiring training in designated areas reporting any concerns to clinical managers
  7. Advise and support staff in relation to clinical skills training.
  8. Train, standardise and monitor Clinical Skills Link Workers to ensure training and assessment is carried out to agreed standards, offering guidance and support.
  9. Be accountable for evaluating clinical skills training provision, identifying skills gaps and take action to address these to ensure continued improvements, standardisation of training, including the standardisation of link assessors and quality of clinical skills training provision in designated clinical areas.
  10. Consider opportunities for income generation in relation to clinical skills training provision and offer ideas in this regard to senior colleagues.
  11. Take reasonable care of own health and safety as per trust policy.
  12. Work with Clinical Skills Training Manager and subject matter experts to provide guidance and support to clinical managers in procuring clinical skills equipment and consumables ensuring the best use of resources.
  13. Under the supervision of the Clinical Skills Training Manager lead on the trial of relevant clinical skills equipment/consumables, its evaluation, reporting and procurement.
  14. Report all accidents, incidents and near misses in relation to own sphere of work and/or defects in equipment as per trust policies and communicate as required with departmental managers and senior clinical skills training team colleagues.
OTHER
  1. Be responsible for ensuring that personal corporate essential training requirements, as dictated by the trust, are met in a timely manner.
  2. Be responsible for booking an appointment and completing preparation work for annual PDR appraisal. Engage in the PDR process and take responsibility for drafting a summary of the discussion and objectives.
  3. Support the department, division and Trust and at times undertake other activities to ensure the smooth running of The Christie Institute for Cancer Education and the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse or Allied Health Professional.
  • Certificate in teaching and assessing or working towards.
  • First level degree or working towards.
  • PG Cert or willingness to work towards.
Desirable criteria
  • Certificate in cancer care / oncology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post qualifying experience as a Nurse or AHP in an acute care setting.
  • Experience of assessing students/learners.
  • Teaching small and large groups of staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Managerial or leadership experience post qualifying.
  • Experience of working in an acute oncology setting.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills. Evidence of effective generic clinical skills.
  • Completed UKONS SACT Competency Passport.
  • Experience of delivering generic clinical skills training e.g., venepuncture, reconstitution and administration, cannulation, CVAD’s, NEWS2 and Observations and SACT administration training.
  • Ability to deliver high standard of patient care.
  • Computer literacy - Microsoft outlook, word and excel.
  • Utilise evidence-based practice to inform own work.
  • Able to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Able to prioritise and manage own workload.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering generic clinical skills training e.g., catheterisation, ECG
