The urology department is looking for a well-motivated and enthusiastic individual to join their team. This post is designed to recruit a full-time consultant (10PA post) to provide a range of services in Urology (Outpatient, Diagnostic and Operative) including participation in a 1 in 11 on call rota covering the University Hospital site (there are no Urology inpatients at Rugby).
The principal objective of the post would be to reinforce the existing provision for the diagnosis and treatment of urinary stone disease and upper tract malignancy.
University Hospital is a tertiary referral centre and provides a comprehensive urological service. We serve a population of in excess of 1 million people in Coventry & Warwickshire (in partnership with
George Eliot and South Warwickshire Hospitals). University Hospital is also a designated Trauma
Centre. Its satellite hospital, St Cross Rugby is situated 10 miles east of University Hospital and delivers outpatient and day case urology services.

Main duties of the job
As part of our commitment to patients and delivery of a world class service for all we have created the UHCW Improvement (UHCWi) System in partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle; this involves a structured approach to removing waste and putting the patient first using a lean management system and methodologies.Our culture and ways of working reflect and embed the practices and methodologies of UHCWi. You are expected, where identified, to attend and complete relevant training and development opportunities to support this. This may include Lean for Leaders, Advanced Lean Training, and the Human Factors Programme, amongst others.
Full attendance and completion of identified courses is considered essential and a prerequisite for this post.
The job plan will typically comprise of approximately 7.5 direct clinical care programmed activities (PAs) and 1.5 supporting professional activities (SPAs) as outlined in the sample timetable given below which includes on call commitment (1 programmed activity).Opportunities to increase SPA allocation (up to 2.5SPAs) by participating in non-clinical duties such as teaching and research will be discussed at the job plan review six months after the commencement of the appointment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will work in conjunction with the existing general urologists to provide a sustainable service for the treatment of Urinary stone disease and general urology. The post holder would involve taking part in the on-call services for urology on a 1 in 9 basis
Outpatient Clinics
Each consultant surgeon has a minimum of two outpatient clinics per week. All clinics have support from dedicated, skilled, technical staff.
Theatre Sessions
The new consultant would have access to scheduled theatre sessions in day unit and/ or main theatres. There is potential for either diagnostic or in-patient theatre sessions at a mutually agreed frequency
Consultant appointments are made to the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust; as services are developed and changed, the base of posts may alter and any employee of the Trust will be expected, within an agreed clinical strategy, to move his/her sessions as the service requires.In particular, your attention is drawn to the fact that the post advertised may include routine evening and week-end working as part of the working arrangements for the new hospital the details of which are currently under discussion. The specific scheduling of such activities would be subject to mutual agreement and may be agreed at a later date in the future.
