Job overview

We are currently recruiting a full time Dental Nurse Manager (37.5hrs per week) to lead on our new project for Mouthcare on our hospital wards. This role will include, audits planning and delivery of our Mouthcare Matters Programme.

The successful candidate will be based at our Dental Hospital in Whitechapel and will be an 80/20 split of admin and working clinically with our inpatients at Royal London hospital with plans in future to grow this project across the Barts Health network.

Main duties of the job

To be the trust’s mouth care nurse and lead on improving the oral health of hospitalised patients. The post-holder will be responsible for carrying out regular audit of existing mouth care protocols and rolling out a mouth care training programme to health care professionals within their Trust.

This will predominantly involve ward-based training. The post-holder will also be responsible for establishing a mouth care network with representatives from nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, SALT, pharmacy, and doctors.

The post holder will provide leadership to the Dental Nurse team daily, inspiring them with strong leadership, excellent clinical skills and a visible and exemplary commitment to patient-centeredness.

The post holder will work collaboratively with the Lead Dental Nurse and the Senior Nurse to escalate department and staffing issues where appropriate.

The post holder will carry out clinical dental nursing on a minimum of two days per week, ensuring credibility with the nursing team and role modelling excellent clinical nursing skills.

The post holder will line manage the Dental Nurses allocated to the mouthcare team.

The post holder will represent the mouthcare team at nurse management meeting and the clinical governance group and will be expected to take responsibly for delivering agreed actions with nursing teams.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NEBDN and/or an appropriate professional qualification or equivalent.
  • General Dental Council registration
  • NEBDN or BDA qualification in Oral Health
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the mouthcare matters programme.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience working as a Band 5 senior dental similar NHS setting.
  • Ability to work as part of a team with a professional approach towards work and colleagues.
  • Evidence of knowledge and experience of HR processes and policies.
  • Evidence of service improvement.
  • Previous experience of working in a hospital setting.
  • Responsibility for clinical activities appropriate to department.
  • Responsibility for maintaining stock levels and ordering where appropriate.
  • Participation in the recruitment and selection of dental nurses.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of line management of Dental Nurses.
  • Experience nursing with special care patients

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of range of dental nursing procedures
  • Acquired through training and experience.
  • Knowledge of leadership models.
