Eye Retrieval Technician | Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust

The Nottingham Tissue and Eye Donation Partner (NTEDP) (formally known as the Eye Retrieval Service Scheme) is based within the Ambulatory Care Directorate within NUH.

NUH has actively supported organ and tissue donation as a positive option at the time of bereavement. It has demonstrated its commitment to ensuring that all patients' choices made in life are respected and facilitated in a timely empathetic manner at the time of death.

The responsibilities of the Eye Donor Technician will be to identify all potential tissue/eye donors from across the Trust, approach the next of kin to provide them with all the relevant time sensitive information enabling them to make informed choices, refer potential donors to the National referral Centre (NRC) in Liverpool for consenting, await consent then carry out the donation.

The successful applicant will be able to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service, and must complete Eye Retrieval Training within the two months of employment.

They will also display a positive approach to raising awareness for Tissue and Eye donation, utilising skills and knowledge to solve challenges and issues sensitively

To assist the Eye Donor Coordinator in the day to day activities of the Nottingham Tissue and Eye Donation Partner site.

To identify and screen potential tissue donors within the Trust

To liaise with in-house bereavement and mortuary teams, medical teams, local general practitioners and the coroners offices to coordinate facilitation of corneal/tissue donation

To liaise with the National Health Blood and Transplant Tissue and Eye Services for referrals, courier information and register checks.

To complete Clinical procedures and documentation in accordance with National Health Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Third Party Agreement for the retrieval of ocular tissue for transplantation

The post-holder is required to complete local mandatory training requirements and NHSBT mandatory training requirement.

Retrieve ocular tissue for transplantation within 24 hours of a patient’s death.

Provide clear and empathetic written and verbal information to colleagues, stakeholders and members of the public

To act as a resource of clinical expertise and contact to colleagues, stakeholders and the local community

To undertake promotional activity in-house and externally in accordance with the NHSBT Deceased Tissue Donor Strategy

To record and collate information for local and NHSBT quality assurance and performance data collection

Participate in training and meetings that would require travelling to other regional areas

The post holder would be expected to work autonomously within the Trust

As an Eye Donor Technician you will be responsible for the daily screening of every single death at NUH, based on pre-defined medical categories.

As an Eye donor Technician you will initiate conversations about potential tissue donation with the bereaved, face to face and over the telephone in a respectful and empathetic manner.

As an Eye Donor Technician you will be required to manage the service independently, this will include the day to day running of the service, making decisions independently, and seeking advice where appropriate during the coordinators leave/sickness.

As an Eye Donor Technician you must ensure confidentiality at all times in accordance with hospital policies and guidance.

Maintain effective channels of communication between internal and external agencies in the process of facilitation of tissue donation.

Extract and accurately record health information from patient notes, ensuring all referral documentation is completed in an accurate and timely manner, and forwarded daily to the National Referral Centre.

Undertake eye retrieval procedures and techniques in accordance with NHSBT Eye Enucleation SOP5858.

Ensure equipment used is fit for purpose, record and report any damages/faults

As an Eye Donation technician you will be expected to perform duties in the mortuary and at funeral directors, with direct exposure to the deceased

Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe moving and handling of deceased patients' and ensure mandatory training is current

The post-holder must have dexterity to perform precise and delicate clinical procedures on the eye of deceased patients

Be aware of the need for confidentiality both in the written and spoken word.

Complete daily, monthly and yearly data and audit requirement, and forward to appropriate bodies when and in format requested.

Represent, where necessary, the Nottingham Eye Retrieval Partnership, at local and national events.

Demonstrate duties and techniques to students/visiting colleagues both NUH/NHSBT

The post holder must be able to work as a lone worker at times.

Be able to competently use Careflow, Notis, Nerve Centre and other information technology systems and participate in training programmes to develop and update personal skills to meet the needs of the service.

Maintain a tidy, safe working environment, reporting any hazards or faults timely and appropriately

Present a professional, polite and courteous attitude at all times and be appropriately dressed when on duty.

Undertake any other duties, which may reasonably be required
