Software Engineering Manager
Shiptheory Bristol
Salary: £55,000 - 90,000 per year
Requirements:
- Minimum of 6 years developing commercial-grade PHP applications
- At least 2 years of experience as a team leader or manager
- Proficient in Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Experience with CakePHP or another MVC framework
- Knowledge of SOAP, GraphQL, RESTful APIs
- Understanding of relational database design, normalization, and indexing
- Experience in e-commerce or shipping is a plus
- Intermediate understanding of cloud computing techniques and best practices
- Strong enthusiasm for developer efficiency and smooth CI/CD pipelines
- Proven experience leading or managing engineers in a team environment
- Experience running performance reviews and developing engineers
- Experience hiring and building engineering teams
- Strong understanding of delivery management, including planning, estimation, and accountability
Responsibilities:
- Manage a small team of engineers (5–6 developers) to ensure consistent delivery and high engineering standards
- Fix bugs and design infrastructure and systems
- Build new features and maintain Linux-based development and production servers
- Collaborate with the wider team to add value to the Shiptheory platform
- Build and maintain scalable deployment pipelines
- Review and provide feedback on code delivered by other developers
- Mentor and lead junior developers in system design and best practices
- Identify risks and make suggestions for improvement
- Contribute to internal and external documentation
