This is run as a joint programme with Northampton University.The course is split between clinical practice and University attendance. Mileage for practice days and university attendance will be covered from the Milton Keynes 0-19 Team base.

Applicants must be Registered Nurses or Midwives with a current UK NMC registration and have an interest in addressing the health needs of children and families. The course is run at Post Graduate Diploma (Level 7), see person specification for application requirements.Applicants must also be holders of a valid driving licence and have access and use of a car for the duration of the training.
Consideration to be paid at Band 6 during the training can be given depending on previous relevant experience, subject to an Inter Authority Transfer confirmation.
Main duties of the job
The course commences in September 2025 and are offered on a full-time basis. Please ensure that you indicate on your application if you have commenced the course previously in another university and the reason you did not complete.
The post of Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies as a qualified nurse/midwife to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a recordable/registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The programme will enable SCPHN students to learn and work towards gaining the standards of proficiency for entry into the NMC register as Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN). In collaboration with Northampton University, the Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor, ensures suitable learning environments and create opportunities which will enable the student to develop knowledge, skills and competencies to take on the role of a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within the discipline of School Nursing by the end of the programme.
Once qualified, there is an expectation that you will work for CNWL in a substantive post. We currently offer a 6% recruitment and retention premia for substantive School Nurses (T&C's apply, further information given at interview).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The fundamental responsibilities of the post holder are to attain the academic credentials and the clinical skills required to practice as a NMC registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. The following summarises core responsibilities, but is not an exhaustive list
- Fulfil the requirements of the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing programme by attending university course dates and practice placement days in accordance with University regulations and successful completion of the course
- With the support of the Practice Assessor & Practice Supervisor, to link the theoretical knowledge gained through the university programme to the practice situation
- To demonstrate an understanding of current and emerging national, regional and local healthcare legislation, policies and guidelines as they pertain to chosen pathway
- To develop/build on skills of individual caseload management and leadership/management skills within a team, taking into consideration the abilities of skill mix
- To work within University regulations pertaining to academic work and student conduct
- To work within employing organisation policies as they pertain to the relevant clinical setting
- To work within employing organisation policies relating to employee responsibilities.
- To proactively seek for learning opportunities and be creative adaptable and innovative in response to complexing and challenging situations

Education, qualification & training
Essential criteria- Educated to degree level
- Current UK NMC Registered
- Evidence of recent study at degree level or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria- Demonstrate keen interest in public health and working in the community
- Community experience or other experience relevant to School Nursing
- Post registration experience
Knowledge & Skills
Essential criteria- Understanding of public health with knowledge of the Healthy Child Programme
- Knowledge of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
- Knowledge of current government legislation relating to School Nursing
- Ability to provide evidence-based health promotion information to individuals and groups
- Professional knowledge of normal child development
Personal qualities
Essential criteria- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work as a member of a team, and on own initiative in line with national and local standards and procedures
