An exciting opportunity has arisen for a substantive matron to lead Urgent and Emergency Care services at the Calderdale Royal Hospital. This role encompasses the leadership and management of the Emergency Department, Medical Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC), and other supporting services such as the Resuscitation Team.

The post holder will be a key member of the Divisional Management Team, collaborating effectively with fellow Matrons and General Managers to deliver high-quality patient services. There is a specific focus on visible, accessible, and strong clinical leadership; service quality and development; and ensuring patients experience safe, timely, and effective care.

The successful applicant will have a proven track record in leading and managing a busy Emergency Department.

Additionally, the successful applicant will work closely with the Emergency Department Matron at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary to ensure coverage at both sites.

The main duties of this role is to work collaboratively with other directorates within the organisation to ensure the best outcomes for patients. Additionally, to facilitate and lead in a positive, flexible and strategic manner.

Managerial Duties
  • To fulfil requirements of the National Matrons Charter by promoting commitment to positive patient’s experience (specifically in relation to hospital cleanliness, food quality and infection control).
  • Work collaboratively with PALs and Risk Management to help prevent, curtail and manage complaints, in line with Trust and Government requirements.
  • Have visible presence within the Emergency Department, including undertaking direct clinical care.
  • Contribute to achieving the Division’s financial targets.
  • To provide professional advice to Ward and department Managers and other colleagues re safe and efficient services for patients.
  • To ensure the effective utilisation of the workforce through efficient rostering and the management/compliance with the organisations rostering key performance indicators.

Contribute proactively to service development ensuring the best use of all resources using effective benchmarking systems.

Work in partnership with Associate Directors of Nursing, Head Nurse for Urgent and Emergency Care, General Managers and Clinical Directors to ensure national and local priorities and standards are met.

To facilitate and lead in a positive, flexible and strategic manner.

Conduct nursing staffing reviews at least twice per annum and ensure reporting is in place to support the national requirements for nurse staffing.

To work with the Associate Director of Nursing, Head Nurse for Urgent and Emergency Care, Deputy Director of Operations, and General Managers to provide strategic direction and professional leadership for the Division’s Nursing Staff.

To jointly ensure the provision of effective, quality patient services, within existing resources.

To be professionally responsible for the development and function of Budget Holders within own areas.

To contribute to the Trust’s Modernisation Agenda and new ways of working.

To raise the profile of nursing amongst colleagues and patients.

Contribute to the delivery of, and to take the lead role on, key service targets and service change.

To utilise professional networks outside the Trust to inform and lead developments within own area.

To deputise for the Head Nurse for Urgent and Emergency Care as required, including project/portfolio work.

To take a lead in the use of research/evidence based care within own areas of responsibility.

To utilise effective relationships with medical colleagues in the promotion of optimum service delivery.

To challenge inappropriate practice effectively and manage conflict appropriately.

To contribute to effective multi-disciplinary team work.

To assist the Trust OD Agenda by contributing to in-house training programme as appropriate.

To work in partnership with other agencies, in providing quality patient care, (eg PCTs on service developments relevant to own area).

Responsible for implementing effective systems, control processes and risk management arrangements in line with the clinical and corporate governance strategy for the Directorate.

Support the monitoring of compliance with internal and external governance and best practice requirements in the service(s).

Support conflict resolution from patients, staff, suppliers, other internal and external service providers and partner organisations in the service(s).

To participate as appropriate in the proper investigation of patient complaints or complaints from other users of the service, drafting of responses as necessary and taking identified corrective actions. Ensure all action plans are completed and implemented appropriately.

To support the education of staff by encouraging learning from complaints to ensure the highest quality of patient care is delivered.

To support the systems of incident reporting and education of staff following incidents and adverse events.

Maintain and develop an environment and culture that improves health, safety and security.

Regularly assesses risks to health, safety and security using the results to promote and improve practice.

Supports a culture in which individuals feel able to report incidents and that learning takes place from all incidents and complaints.

Ensure Risk Registers are updated monthly for your designated area.
