Specialty Nurse for the Lung Cancer Screening Programme

The purpose of the role is to facilitate the clinical flow of the Lung Cancer Screening Programme participants. The successful candidate will act as a conduit between the external supplier’s nurses, local medical teams across both primary and secondary care, and screening participants.Working closely with key stakeholders this role will be central to the delivery and successful implementation of the screening programme. The lead nurse will have clinical oversight of patients on the screening pathway and be responsible for facilitating onward referrals as dictated by the clinical leads.
This is a pivotal clinical leadership role; the Lead Nurse will contribute to Lung Cancer Screening Programme virtual MDT meetings, working closely within the Respiratory Team, responsible assessor, responsible clinician and radiologist for the programme to facilitate a robust assurance and governance processes.They will be a key point of contact between the third party delivery partners, secondary care, screening participants and the Peninsula Cancer Alliance Lung Cancer Screening Programme team.
***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***
Main duties of the job
Develops standards of care and management of patients in the pathway
Working with the Lung Cancer Screening Programme lead consultant to develop policies and processes across the Trust in relation to delivery of lung cancer screening
Supports staff in the investigation of complaints and serious incidents requiring investigation
Attendance and involvement in local and wider MDT meetings with colleagues from both primary and secondary care
Undertake the appropriate professional portfolio of work in agreement with the Associate Chief Nursing Officer
Lead on nurse led clinics for Lung Cancer Screening Programme and work alongside the lead consultant for Lung Cancer Screening Programme to see patients in MDT clinic
Professionals involved in screening assessment are expected to fulfil the requirements for individual professional training and for their continuing professional development. They should carry out assessments and procedures regularly, so they can maintain their skills and competence
To be responsible for supporting the Lung Cancer Screening Programme coordinator in arranging and coordinating MDT meetings within the Trust and at regional and where relevant Network level
Work with the Lung Cancer Screening Programme coordinator to ensure treatment/action plans created are produced and recorded for each patient discussed at the MDT meetings and communicate this information to the relevant professional, and/or in line with the operational policy of the MDT

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Leadership and professional responsibilities- Acts as secondary care lead nurse, across the Trust, including for more junior staff within the team.
- Leads and develops standards of care and management of patients in the pathway.
- Working with the Lung Cancer Screening Programme lead consultant leads to develop policies and processes across the Trust in relation to delivery of lung cancer screening.
- Supports staff in the investigation of complaints (formal and informal) and serious incidents requiring investigation.
- Attendance and involvement in local and wider MDT meetings with colleagues from both primary and secondary care.
- Undertake the appropriate professional portfolio of work in agreement with the Associate Chief Nursing Officer
- Lead on nurse led clinics for Lung Cancer Screening Programme and work alongside the lead consultant for Lung Cancer Screening Programme to see patients in MDT clinic
- Management of the virtual nodule pathway. Ensuring patients are monitored and scanned at appropriate time intervals. Escalating any delays.
- Professionals involved in screening assessment are expected to fulfil the requirements for individual professional training and for their continuing professional development. They should carry out assessments and procedures regularly, so they can maintain their skills and competence.
- To be responsible for supporting the Lung Cancer Screening Programme coordinator in arranging and coordinating MDT meetings within the Trust and at regional and where relevant Network level.
- To work with the Lung Cancer Screening Programme coordinator to develop agendas for MDT meetings making judgements on content and timing of meetings.
- To support the Lung Cancer Screening Programme coordinator to coordinate and distribute the list of patients for discussion at each meeting, highlighting any patient delays, and to communicate the cut-off time for the referral of patients for discussion to appropriate medical staff.
- Work with the Lung Cancer Screening Programme coordinator to ensure treatment/action plans created are produced and recorded for each patient discussed at the MDT meetings and communicate this information to the relevant professional, and/or in line with the operational policy of the MDT

Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria- • Clinically up to date/competent in own area of expertise.
- • Able to work within and outside the trust with credibility in both areas.
- • Previous demonstrable experience of staff development and performance management.
- • Clinical teaching.
- • Demonstrable experience across community and acute settings
Qualifications
Essential criteria- • 1st Level Registered Nurse or equivalent experience.
- • Valid NMC registration.
- • First degree
- • Master’s degree or equivalent demonstrable experience.
Abilities & Aptitude
Essential criteria- • Ability to work with and influence different teams involved with patient care, at times with conflicting views.
- • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels.
- • Organise and prioritise work schedule, confident in working autonomously.
