We are seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Acute Hospital Liaison Service, based at the Victoria Centre on the Great Western Hospital site. You will join a well-established, highly regarded multidisciplinary team with strong links to community and crisis services, working within a PLAN-accredited liaison psychiatry service.

This post offers a key clinical leadership role, providing assessment and treatment advice for adults of working age in the acute hospital, while working closely with the team manager to lead service development and quality improvement. There are excellent opportunities to shape and grow the service further in a supportive and forward-thinking environment.

The role also offers strong professional development opportunities, including reinstating core and higher trainee placements, contributing to teaching within the hospital, and access to a Trust-wide leadership development programme covering personal leadership, team leadership, and leading change.

Main duties of the job

Following fresh investment into the medical workforce, we are recruiting Two consultant colleagues to join working with the Mental Health Liaison Team (MHLT) attached with the Great Western Hospital (GWH) in Swindon GWH is a 670 bedded District general hospital with a 24/7 emergency department.

The team provide rapid, prioritised and proportionate assessment of mental health needs for patients admitted to the GWH. The service accepts referrals for patients aged 18 and over from both the wards and the Emergency Department.

On an average the team receives about Thirty referrals on a weekly basis. These include about Twenty General Adult referrals and about ten referrals for older adult service users. The post holder is expected to attend a daily MDT meeting in the morning with the team members, triage these referrals and see as appropriate.

Usually it averages to about Three to four Face to Face patient contacts on a daily basis.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Higher Degree e.g MD,PHD,Msc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months of gaining CCT
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
Desirable criteria
  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in an inpatient/community setting.

Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • To possess leadership skills and be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise clinical work
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, in order to effectively work with patients, carers and staff.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in Adults of working age and to deal with crisis situations.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of the management skills required to function successfully as a Consultant.

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to and experience of undergraduate and postgraduate learning and teaching.
  • Understand principles of teaching.

Research and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication.
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project.

Management

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of management/leadership skills training.
