Job overview
We have amazing opportunities for highly motivated Band 5 RNs to join our dynamic, motivated Interventional Radiology (IR) team. These are nursing roles with a difference.
IR is a form of pin hole surgery; a specialty rapidly developing that offers nursing roles that are challenging and hugely satisfying.
A robust training programme will support you to develop expert knowledge that enables you to rotate between nursing roles in diagnostic radiology, IR labs and in IR day case units. The nursing roles include:
- Surgical scrub techniques, assisting IR doctors
- Patient care and observations during IR procedures
- Recovery care in Day Case Units
- Responding, assisting with emergencies in Radiology
- Supporting all staff groups in Radiology
Candidates should be motivated, forward thinking and hold a passion for professional standards within the NMC guidelines. No day is the same in IR and successful candidates will thrive in a fast paced and quickly changing environment.
Previous IR experience, or expertise in a similar environment such as theatres or cardiac catheter labs, is preferred but not essential.
Predominantly, the working week is: Mon-Fri with some weekend cover.
All IR nurses are expected to participate in the dedicated out of hours on-call service for IR.

Main duties of the job
The main duties of this post are as follows but not limited to:
- Provide daily nursing advice and support the radiology department, assisting radiologists and radiographers with a wide range of specialised procedures
- Provide nursing care to patients attending Radiology
- To admit, recovery and discharge patients in IR Day Case Units
- To monitor patient clinical observations and administer IV medication where required
- To scrub and assist inside the IR labs

A brand new IGIS Hub has established a 24/7 service for image guided interventional surgery, comprising of interventional radiology, vascular surgery and interventional cardiology. The IGIS Hub include:
2 x IR laboratories
3 x cardiac catheter laboratories
1 x hybrid imaging theatre
1 x joint dedicated 16 bedded Day Case Unit

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria- Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration
- Competency in IV drug administration and cannulation skills
- Competency in Basic Life Support
- Evidence of Continuous Professional Development
- Ability to wear Radiation Protection PPE for prolonged periods
- Experience in interventional radiology, endoscopy, theatre or cardiac interventional nursing
- Up to date with professional issues that influence Radiology Nursing, relating to practice, management, education and research
- Evidenced effective interpersonal/communication skills and ability to priorities work load
