A new post is available in the Histopathology Department. This post presents an exciting opportunity to work closely with the quality and training team. The department has a workload of around 70 000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services.

This is an excellent opportunity to work within a committed team of office, laboratory and Consultant Pathologist staff. The department encourages active professional development and further educational activities. The service is expanding Biomedical Scientist advanced dissection and Biomedical Scientist reporting roles.

The service is also carrying out digital pathology reporting, and is progressing towards full digital reporting. We also use CEREBRO specimen tracking system. The service is also replacing most of its specialist laboratory equipment this year.

The post holder is required to be support the implementation, delivery and maintenance of the quality management system and such quality initiatives as deemed necessary to achieve and maintain compliance with UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation. As specialised staff you will also be responsible to provide training in all aspects of technical Histology to; medical staff, other BMS staff, new entrant staff, students, Associate Practitioners and Biomedical Support Workers (BMSW), as necessary.

The post holder will be able to work autonomously but to set targets without direct supervision, referring to senior staff as necessary.

This is an opportunity to develop your skills and experience in Histopathology training and quality management.

To assist/deputise for senior BMS staff in the supervision of BMS staff and workload.

  • Take charge of a specified area of work, including the Main laboratory as required, supervise non-state registered staff and other BMS staff, and deputise for Band 7 section leaders when necessary.
  • Implement policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust
  • To assist in the development and maintenance of standards as necessary for continuing UKAS ISO 15189:2022 accreditation
  • Carry out quality audits (Horizontal, Vertical and Examination) of laboratory processes/procedures
  • To assist in the development and implementation of departmental training plans for staff, as required.
