University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Are you a B5 Physiotherapist, or current B6, looking to further your Physiotherapy career and not sure where you want to specialise, or desiring a change? Then this may be the perfect opportunity for you!

We have a 7-month fixed term post for a B6 Physiotherapist within the medicine therapy team. Ideal for someone who wants to consolidate their clinical skills, whilst growing and developing their leadership and managerial skills.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHSwe’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities.

We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

About the Team

Our integrated therapy team covers a diverse range of wards including a Respiratory High Dependency Unit (RHDU); hepatology; renal; respiratory; gastroenterology; infectious diseases and general medicine. We routinely cover complex patient presentations including neurological, cognitive, bariatric, moving and handling, complex social situations, and tissue viability.

Our therapy team is a valued part of an expansive MDT, priding itself in delivering patient-centred care. The entire MDT strives to be at the forefront of innovation and development.

As this post is part of the wider Therapy services department, you will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in-service training. You will be part of a large department of over 300 Therapy staff including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff.

We provide a 7-day therapy service and therefore you need to be able to work weekends and bank holiday, on a rota basis. This also includes our acute respiratory out of hours service (On-call).

The main responsibilities of this post include:
  • Working across a number of clinical areas to perform assessments; formulate treatment plans and goal setting, with a highly diverse range of patients.
  • Working closely with specialised MDT to allow for the seamless care of patients, and successful transitions, from the hyper acute to the home setting.
  • Involvement in training and development, with both the therapy team, members of the MDT, and patients/carers.
  • The development of professional leadership and management skills, through on the job learning, supervision, and in-service training.

You should ensure you fulfil all the essential criteria and read the job description before applying and ensure you have these specific skills and knowledge to work in the therapy team for medicine:

  • Evidence of experience using specialist respiratory equipment, and using respiratory treatment
techniques
  • Documented evidence of experience doing shifts within an acute respiratory on-call out of
hours service - including intensive care, both adults and children.
  • Recent experience teaching students is desirable
  • Clear desire for wanting to work in UHS therapy service on your application form.
  • Clear expressed desire for working within the medicine therapy team
Please note:
  • CV applications are not accepted
  • Interviews will be held on Thurs 3rd April
  • This is only a 7-month fixed term post and not permanent.

If this post is not for you and you are interested in other therapy opportunities, please e-mail: Annette.Purkis@uhs.nhs.uk

We welcome enquiries and are happy to answer any questions you may have.
