Consultant Cardiac Surgeon with an interest In Minimally Invasive Surgery (10 Programmed Activities)

Applications are invited for the above post which will be based at the Barts Heart Centre, Barts Health NHS Trust.

Barts Health NHS Trust is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in Britain and the cardiovascular centre is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, providing sector wide care to a population of over 6 million.

The successful applicant will be joining a team of 2 surgical GUCH consultants, 16 adult surgeons.

Applicants should have completed sub-specialist training in adult cardiac surgery.

Applicants will be expected to participate in a 1:8 on-call rota for the cardiac surgery.

Applicants wishing to apply for this post should possess the MRCS or equivalent, be GMC-registered with a license to practice and hold specialist registration or be within six months of specialist registration at the interview date.

Main duties of the job
  1. Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
  2. Leadership, development and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with the Trust’s business plans. Liaison and communication with the Clinical Director, the General Manager and the CAG Group Director.
  3. Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  1. The post holder will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of cardiac surgery services to Barts Health.
  2. An additional role is to deliver and further develop a minimal access and robotic surgery service.
  3. To enhance and further develop our peri-operative management program.
  4. Participate in the multidisciplinary valve team, contributing to the development of complex treatments, innovations and research.
  5. To undertake 1.5 days of operating. 1 fixed and 1 flexible (alternate weeks).

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS, or equivalent
  • FRCS(CTh) or equivalent
  • On GM Specialist Register for cardiothoracic surgery or within 6 months of attaining CCT
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Research Degree
  • MD or PhD

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive training in Adult Cardiac Surgery in dedicated units with a dedicated MIS Mitral fellowship
  • Ability to demonstrate personal experience of academic research and describe and discuss findings and impact
  • Experience of research, presentations to learned societies on topics related to general thoracic surgery
  • Experience teaching and training undergraduates, junior doctors and allied professionals
  • Peer-reviewed publications in indexed journals
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate experience in perioperative management of patients with mitral disease. Must have experience of independent MIS Mitral surgery.
  • Evidence of innovative approaches to healthcare
  • Clinical guideline development
  • Management course
  • PhD/ MD Thesis
  • Completed Train-The-Trainers or equivalent course

  • Able to provide evidence of clinical audit and demonstrate understanding of impact and challenges this brings.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of current and future NHS challenges and strategy.
