Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology (ST3)

We have an exciting vacancy for a Clinical Fellow within Medical Microbiology at our University College Hospital site for 6 months (renewable by mutual agreement) startingJanuary 2025. This is an opportunity to join a dynamic department with input into specialist haematology, oncology, neurology and neurosurgical services as well as liaison with general medical, surgical and paediatric departments within a London teaching hospital.
The post-holder will provide clinical support to departmental consultants and trainee colleagues through delivery of key services in clinical microbiology. The post-holder will also have access to the resources and opportunities that are available to specialist trainees in the department, which is part of the ‘Bloomsbury hub’ for training in infection in London.
The Department of Clinical Microbiology offers a wide range of experience to train Medical Microbiology/Virology/Infectious Diseases Specialist Registrars to the standards required Core and Higher Specialty Infection Training for the Part 1 and Part 2 FRCPath examinations.
The Clinical Microbiology department provides a liaison to the diagnostic microbiology laboratory, while providing clinical teams in the various hospitals that make up UCLH NHS Foundation Trust with clinical advice and antimicrobial stewardship input.The department works with the teams in Infection Prevention and Control as well as Infectious Diseases and Virology to provide a comprehensive Infection Service.
Clinical service routine
The clinical fellow will undertake the role of the microbiology ‘specialty registrar’ and will participate in the work of the department in clinical liaison, laboratory and infection control, under supervision of the consultants. This includes authorisation (sign-out) of laboratory reports, dealing with telephone enquiries from clinicians and participating in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings.
Dependant on experience and seniority there will be the opportunity to lead on liaison activities and MDTs.
He/she will liaise closely with clinical colleagues concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, and prevention of infections.
Where appropriate, bench-work experience in all sections of the laboratory will be provided.
Specialist registrars who have completed the induction period join in the clinical advice on-call rota on Monday to Friday for Microbiology (including Virology) and on Saturday/Sunday for microbiology alone. As appropriate there is a consultant Microbiologist and Virologist second on-call.
