An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Nursing at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the accreditation and corporate specialist nurses portfolio.

In partnership with the Chief Operating Officer, Director of Nursing, Deputy Director of Nursing and Senior Leadership team the Head of Nursing is responsible for developing service strategies. The post holder will lead on the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of clinical strategies, patient information, policies, and procedures to ensure they remain current and responsive to the needs of service users and in line with national recommendations and evidence base.

The post holder will be an integral part of the Trust senior nursing team working with other Heads of Nursing, Associate Directors of Nursing, Deputy Chief Nurses and Chief Nursing Officer.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide nursing leadership and expert nursing advice and will work closely with the director / deputy director of nursing and Deputy Director of Quality and Patient Safety to ensure that high standards are maintained.

The post holder will lead on the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of clinical strategies, patient information, policies, and procedures to ensure they remain current and responsive to the needs of service users and in line with national recommendations and evidence base.

The post holder will professionally challenge and question, utilising expert clinical judgement skills. The post holder will work flexibly across the corporate nursing team to lead projects on behalf of the Group/ Trust as required.

The post holder will lead and develop the Trust quality accreditation programme.

The post holder will provide line management, professional advice, and support to the accreditation team.

The post holder will write regular reports relating to areas of responsibility, providing assurance and detail, including development of ongoing improvement plans which could require the organisation of complex activities or programmes of work, with regular review and adjustment.

Programmes will impact across departments to ensure consistency.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (NMC)
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing relevant professional development.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of ability to work strategically
  • Ability to hold others to account
  • Influencing & negotiating skills outside of line management.
  • Evidence of continuing professional Development via a portfolio.
  • Working knowledge of infection control policies and procedures
  • Change/people management experience at senior level. Ability to plan and prioritise own and others workload when under pressure.
  • Ability to interpret and understand and complex data.
  • Advanced IT skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant evidence-based practice e.g. NICE guidelines, safety alerts, current nursing agenda.
  • Knowledge and understanding of NHS and social care policy and strategy.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent and extensive clinical leadership experience.
  • Wide and significant experience of working at a senior level (band 8A or above) in a complex environment
  • Experience in leading and managing a service or team with a high degree of autonomy.
  • Experience of leading service / quality. improvement projects.
  • Experience in audit, research and innovation activity.
  • Ability to manage conflict. Effective organisational and planning skills to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to prioritise a complex workload and work independently in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Experience of working within an accreditation.
  • Experience of coaching and developing colleagues.
