Job overview

The Unit Manager for Operations will be responsible for the operational management of all aspects of the Adult Clinical Unit. This key leadership role involves working closely with senior clinical leaders and managers to drive excellence in management, leadership, support, and capacity within the unit.

The post holder will ensure that effective management underpins the leadership of the unit, supporting the Clinical Service Manager and Managing Director to ensure leadership decisions are translated into impactful service delivery. In partnership with the Clinical Lead, the Unit Manager will oversee performance and governance across a portfolio of clinical services across various sites/venues

Main duties of the job
  • Operational Leadership: Manage all aspects of the Adult Clinical Unit, ensuring services are delivered efficiently, effectively, and within budget. This includes driving cost improvement schemes and delivering the business plan.
  • Continuous Improvement: Foster a culture of continuous improvement in service delivery, focusing on both efficiency and effectiveness. Use job planning, appraisals, and robust line management to encourage the workforce to work to the top of their license and develop innovative solutions to improve services.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Engagement: Ensure the effective communication of operational priorities across a broad range of complex and varied services. Use advanced interpersonal and communication skills to engage with internal and external stakeholders, including service users and a diverse range of Trust staff, to deliver new service models and ways of working.

The Adult Unit encompasses a broad range of services that address complex needs. It supports individuals across the adult lifespan with a variety of presenting challenges, including our specialist education provision, family services, trauma services, and community-based programs such as our Adult and Children’s Forensic teams and Family Drug and Alcohol Court teams.

This service line operates in a fully multidisciplinary environment, with teams made up of professionals from Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Work, Psychotherapy, Nursing, and Family Therapy, all working collaboratively to provide holistic care and support.

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Management qualification Evidence of continuing personal development

  • Experience and/or qualification in Project Management

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant management experience, in the NHS or equivalent organisation
  • Evidence of leading change and successful implementation of projects.
  • Has experience of putting together a business case and contributing to its implementation
  • Experience of participating in regulatory inspections
  • Track record of achievement as a leader which demonstrates significant successes through innovation and a strong but sensitive style, which contributes directly to the patient experience and continuous improvement
  • Evidence of a collaborative management style coupled with improving quality of service provision at a strategic level
  • Evidenced experience of building and sustaining effective and productive working relationships with a range of people at local and regional level including statutory, voluntary and private sector organisations
  • Significant experience of financial management and rigorous financial management and control to meet agreed targets
  • Experience of instigating and leading complex change to achieve continuous improvement
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of commercial development

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Service planning and project management. Understanding of project and programme management techniques
  • Well-developed leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams, and have them understand the Trust’s and your performance expectations
  • Analysis of complex data to produce succinct information appropriate for its audience
  • Demonstrates excellent knowledge of access policy and RTT pathways
  • Budgetary management skills. Knowledge of strategic financial planning
  • Ability to assess situations and take calculated risks based on learning and experience, to achieve longer-term improvements
