Band 6 Pre-operative Assessment Specialist Nurse

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual with clinical experience to join an established dynamic nursing team within pre-operative assessment. The prospective post holder will be a registered nurse.

The clinic is presently open from 8am to 6pm 5 days a week. The service is based at Trafford Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The main objective of the unit is to assess and optimises patients for a wide range of elective surgical specialities therefore the prospective post holder will require a broad knowledge preferably within surgical nursing, although medical knowledge would be an advantage, with at least 18 months experience as a band 5 staff nurse.

Pre-operative assessment experience and skills are essential. You will be reliable, innovative, and flexible with good interpersonal/communication skills.

You will be expected to undertake clinical observations such as blood pressure, pulse, BMI and peak flow recording as well as clinical examinations such as MRSA screening, CPE screening, 12 lead ECG recording and venepuncture. The prospective post holder will be required to provide a comprehensive nursing and medical assessment, ensuring all necessary results and reviews are collated prior to admission

You will assist in the development of an environment that supports the value of pre-operative assessment by working collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetist, and the MDT, therefore the candidate will need to have a high level of clinical judgement and decision making skills and be able to carry out clinical duties in accordance with national, Trust and local standards and maintain a patient focused approach.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Evidence of post graduate (level 6/7) professional development
  • Relevant safeguarding training and experience
  • Mentorship qualification or equivalent
  • Demonstrates evidence of commitment to professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Degree qualification or working towards a degree.
  • Appraisal training
  • Management of sickness and absence

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2 years post registration experience in relevant specialty and a minimum of 1 year experience in pre-operative assessment
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate
  • Able to work under own initiative within boundaries of role
  • Working autonomously
  • Demonstrates ability to influence and negotiate with others.
  • Experience of contributing to clinical audit, improvement methodologies and supporting implementation of change
  • Evidence of being able to lead in and assist others in audits, surveys, research
  • Experience of leading and coordinating a team
  • Interpretation of ECG and blood results
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate ability and experience in the following:  Leadership  Team building  Managing resources

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of multi-disciplinary agency working
  • Understanding of equality & diversity and how to apply it to self, patients and managed staff
  • Evidence of coordinating and delegating duties, using clinical expertise to deputise for the nurse in charge
