Both sites at UHNM have a pharmacy cancer unit where systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) and supportive medicines are dispensed to patients. The Cancer Centre at the Royal Stoke site consists of a 40 bedded in-patient ward and a dedicated four bedded Emergency Admissions Bay.

There is also a 27 chaired out-patient area. The County Cancer Unit has an out-patient day unit consisting of 16 chairs and 4 beds. Within the department we have an excellent relationship with other key professionals in order to maximise efficiency of the services provided.

At UHNM we provide cancer care to a local population of 700,000 and diagnose approximately 2,300 new cases of cancer each year. We provide inpatient, day care and outpatient services for all areas of cancer treatment.

The pharmacy directorate has modern, purpose-built pharmacy departments on both hospital sites and has close links with Keele University School of Pharmacy. The Pharmacy team is enthusiastic, forward thinking and vibrant.

You will work alongside Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, MMAs, SATOs and a variety of ward staff in providing the pharmacy services for a wide range of SACT and supportive medicines used to treat cancers.rs site working may be necessary as per the requirements of the department

Main duties of the job
  • Providing dispensary-based activities in the cancer centre hub including the accurate dispensing of prescriptions and specialised items e.g. chemotherapy, clinical trials materials. Working as an Accredited Checking Technician
  • Providing comprehensive, professional and high-quality support in the provision of pharmaceutical services to wards and departments, particularly the oncology/haematology ward and emergency admissions unit
  • Working with the appropriate pharmacist and liaising with the ward for bed availability, ordering all inpatient chemotherapy
  • Participating in any medicines management and safety/quality initiatives within the Directorate
  • Dispensing and checking clinical trials in accordance with the dispensing protocol under the direction of the Clinical Trials Technician/Pharmacist

You will need excellent organisational, communication and computer skills with a high degree of attention to detail and an ability to work alone and act on own initiative.

You will be supported in your training and further development by the experienced Pharmacy Cancer team. This is a great opportunity to be a part of the delivery of treatments for cancers.

Minimum qualifications include; Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council and a National Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) qualification.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated Pharmacy Technician capable of working as part of a multidisciplinary department to work in our highly regarded Pharmacy cancer services team.

Although primarily based at the Royal Stoke you will work across all sites of the hospital as required by the demands of the service

Essential Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ level 3 in Pharmaceutical Services OR National BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences or equivalent nationally recognised qualification plus Accredited underpinning knowledge
  • National Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) qualification
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians

Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum 2 year post qualification experience
  • Commitment and evidence of professional updating and continuous professional development
  • Have up to date knowledge of specialist areas for ward based services; dispensary; aseptic; distribution and / or procurement
  • Patient counselling skills – pleasant professional manner; knowledge of use of medicines and advising patients; assessing patient’s pharmaceutical care needs.
  • Computer literate with good general keyboard skills for using the pharmacy computer systems, including ordering and receiving stock and rectifying stock discrepancies.
  • Literate and numerate.
  • Previous experience of medicines management and patient’s own drug schemes or medicines management services to nursing / residential homes.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of automation/digitalisation
  • Previous experience of working in oncology/haematology
  • Evidence of interest in new ways of working and developing specialist knowledge in a clinical area
