Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust is an internationally renowned centre for the management of children with congenital and acquired heart disease. An opportunity has arisen to join our friendly team in Clinical Physiology.

We have a position for a Band 6 Physiologist to take an active role within our echocardiography team. The role includes performing echocardiograms on children of all ages with varying pathology. Training will be provided to the successful candidate in order to bring their skills in line with paediatric protocols and departmental guidelines.

This is an opportunity for the successful candidate to build on their experiences in cardiac physiology and develop in the challenging world of paediatrics and congenital/inherited heart disease.

Main duties of the job

-To Complete in-house training programme over a 12–24month period with support and teaching from senior clinical scientist/physiologists.
  • To sit or complete the European Accreditation in Echocardiography in Congenital Heart Disease Accreditation (under the umbrella of European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging).
  • To carry out transthoracic paediatric echocardiograms guided by departmental protocols.
  • To produce and authorise an accurate, factual and clinical report for each study, in order to guide the clinician on the management of the patient, therefore recognising when a patient needs to be seen urgently by a Cardiologist
  • To have in-depth knowledge to advise when transthoracic echocardiography is insufficient to answer the clinical question, and proactively suggest alternative/additional investigations
  • To adapt cardiac ultrasound techniques as necessary to suit the need of the child whilst ensuring optimum imaging is maintained at all times
  • To continuously contribute to a high standard of patient care, ensuring that a child friendly and safe environment is maintained at all times
  • To have a clear understanding of the principles of ultrasound physics, and the limitations of ultrasound imaging technology in order to use the specialised medical equipment to its maximum potential
  • To be responsible for the safe use and maintenance of expensive, sensitive specialist equipment, and report failures and breakdown

Academic/Professional qualification

Essential criteria
  • BSc Clinical Physiology – Cardiology OR relevant science subject OR equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate (MSc) certificate in a relevant cardiac speciality (working towards) OR Postgraduate qualification in specialist area within Echocardiography

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of Adult and Paediatric cardiology
  • Previous experience working at a Band 6 level within a Cardiac department
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Congenital Heart Disease in echocardiography, cardiac morphology and the corrective procedures performed in the paediatric population

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to use initiative and to prioritise own workload and work flexibly as part of a team
  • Excellent manner with children and their families.
  • Prepared to learn and teach
