Job overview

An Activities Coordinator is required for the Spinal Injuries Centre based in Sheffield. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to work as part of the Spinal Injuries team providing appropriate activities and support to facilitate physical, social and emotional development of spinal cord injured patients.

You should be prepared to work flexibly to meet the needs of our patient population and provide an interesting, relevant and targeted activity programme. Experience of working within a health or social care setting is required. An outgoing personality with good communication, organisational and IT skills are also vital.

The Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre is a supra regional unit for patients who have sustained spinal cord damage as a result of trauma or pathology. Patients are accepted from a wide catchment area that covers much of the east of England.

The Therapy department offers a service to acute, rehabilitation and readmission patients. The Centre has 6 beds dedicated to ventilator dependent patients and 2 for respiratory patients.

Main duties of the job

The post will involve the moving and handling of patients in one-to-one sessions, group settings as well as on trips out; being a car driver is an essential criteria as the post holder will be required to drive the Centre minibus. The post entails dealing with the general public and other members of the multidisciplinary team so excellent communication, customer care and team working skills are required.

Applicants must also be willing to perform a mix of clerical, domestic and patient related tasks.

Essential criteria
  • - A diploma or equivalent qualification / experience in psychology or social sciences or Occupational Therapy
  • - Training/experience relevant to area of work
  • - Experience of delivering groups or support
Desirable criteria
  • - Degree or equivalent qualification / experience in psychology/social sciences/ Occupational Therapy.
  • - Experience/awareness of safe guarding principles

Experience

  • - Willing to undertake training in basic manual handling, personal care and respiratory support

  • - Training in ventilator patient support as a ‘second person’ only
  • - Willing to drive Centre’s minibus.
