Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Lead

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Psychological Medicine Service at UCLH as discipline lead for child and adolescent psychotherapy and in a senior leadership role in the service.

Children and Young people’s Psychological Medicine sit within a large and busy paediatric and adolescent division at UCLH where mental health support and guidance is offered as part of the medical treatments children and young people receive for short- and longer-term health conditions.

The Psychotherapy team provides a range of assessments and psychotherapy interventions, including longer term and shorter term, treatment to children and young people (including young adults) within a variety of settings, including adolescent medicine, cancer and general paediatrics.

In addition to direct therapeutic work, the post holder will contribute to the overall management of the service, supervise the child psychotherapists and other junior clinicians as well as deliver reflective practice to several staff groups across the trust.

The post holder will contribute to wider service development as well as the smooth delivery of complex mental health services. This will include audit and research within the area served by Psychological Medicine.

The post holder will coordinate the referrals in and out of the psychotherapy team and support the organisational needs of the team including job planning and service delivery.

Regular clinical supervision will be provided by an external senior clinician.

UCLH:
The department of Child and Adolescent Psychological Medicine within the Division of Paediatrics and Adolescent medicine deliver a broad range of child and adolescent mental health provision across the whole of UCLH. With our colleagues from psychiatry, psychology, social work, paediatrics and nursing the child psychotherapy team have roles within Paediatric liaison services, the feeding clinic, Turner clinic, inpatient assessment, and general paediatric outpatient clinics.
There is also a busy multi-disciplinary Psych-oncology team based at the Macmillan Cancer Centre. Child psychotherapists additionally provide input in a broad range of adolescent services including the TRACCS service; a national service for children and young people with complex medical needs, including chronic fatigue and other medically unexplained symptoms.
Our outpatient clinics are commissioned by NHS Camden and provide mental health assessment and treatment for local children and young people with complex health issues. With both a local and national remit our patients come from a broad demographic.

Child Psychotherapy has a central role in the supervision and support of colleagues in many specialist fields including play specialists, clinical nurse specialists (CNS), junior Drs, and colleagues working in emergency medicine. The MDT’s within the division are multi-professional and include paediatricians, nurses, dieticians, social workers and play specialists.
