This post is for a Specialty Doctor in Ortho-Geriatrics. This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

As a Specialty Doctor for Ortho-Geriatrics, you will play a vital role in our multidisciplinary team. Working closely with six experienced consultants, fellow specialist doctors, junior doctors, frailty practitioners, and Advanced Clinical Practitioners, you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of patients.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

Work as part of the medical team on ward rotation, 5A, 5B (Geriatric Medicine), 3B, Ortho-geriatric and in the Ambulatory SDEC in the Frailty Unit, Bevan 1 & 2 and the Frailty service / OPAL service – Whiston

Participate in the initial assessment and management of patients on in AED and the acute frailty unit.

Liaise with other members of the clinical team and other specialties.

Work Closely with the Consultants FY1’s, CT Trainees and ANPs about management of patients.

Develop skills in managing the wards to avoid unnecessary patient delays and maintain good clinical care to all patients.

Professional Responsibilities

To participate in clinical audit and activities.

To participate in continuing professional development. Study leave is to be negotiated. Educational supervision will be provided.

To maintain a portfolio of training.

To comply with Trust policies and procedures, have (and maintain) GMC registration /licensing.

Administrative Responsibilities

To ensure good documentation and record keeping

To ensure all admin tasks including are complete within local Trust targets.

We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.
  • To actively participate in annual performance review to identify personal development needs.
  • To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training sessions as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.

Essential criteria
  • Applicants must hold full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • ALS Certification
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP
  • Evidence of higher learning (to Masters’ level or above)
  • Speciality Certificate in Geriatric Medicine

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of four years’ experience of a broad range of medical/surgical specialties
  • Two years’ experience as a core medical trainee or has equivalent experience and competencies
  • Experience of working in geriatric medicine
  • Understanding of Audit
  • Evidence of active participation in audit
  • Understanding of Research
  • Evidence of contributing to teaching and learning of others
Desirable criteria
  • Active participation in research projects

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of applying sound clinical knowledge and judgment and prioritise clinical need
  • Experience technical competence/diagnostics skills and judgment required
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, capacity to communicate effectively and sensitively to others, able to discuss treatment options with patients and their families in a way they can understand
  • Aware of own limitations
