Job overview

Due to internal promotion, we are looking for a rotational Speech and Language Therapist at University Hospitals Dorset to join our team!

This opportunity falls within our B5 rotations across our acute and stroke wards working with a range of adult acquired conditions.

The successful candidate will provide dysphagia and communication assessment/ therapy to patients with a wide range of clinical diagnoses including stroke, older person’s medicine, respiratory, trauma and gastroenterology.

With specialist teams covering Head & Neck, voice, stroke, acute medicine, older person’s medicine and critical care, there will be opportunities to expand your exposure to, and knowledge in these areas, while completing your rotations in acute and stroke.

Working in comprehensive multi-disciplinary teams, you will be supported by our clinical specialists. We pride ourselves on our NQP and dysphagia competency support structure and ensure our B5s have ample opportunity to access both peer and regular formal supervision.

Base Location: Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital

We are friendly, sociable, supportive team with a focus on service improvement and team development. Our Stroke team are currently involved in the international PhEAST study, providing opportunities to be involved in research from an early stage of your career.

We offer a 7-day service to our patients so weekend and bank holiday working will be required. As part of University Hospitals Dorset, this rotation will involve working across both The Royal Bournemouth Hospital and Poole Hospital sites.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with a range of acquired disorders within an acute care setting including stroke, long-term conditions, and care of the elderly (Placement, voluntary, employed).
  • Experience of assessment, management, therapeutic intervention and discharge of patients with communication disorders and dysphagia

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
  • HCPC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Dysphagia competency

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Sound understanding of the pathology of neurological conditions, respiratory conditions, older person’s medicine, gastroenterology.
  • Knowledge of the clinical pathway for patients from acute care to long term management

other requirements

Essential criteria
  • Be able to speak English as necessary to undertake the role
Desirable criteria
  • To have a full driving license and be able to drive within the local geographic area

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent, effective and adaptable verbal & written communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
