Overview

The Magnet Business Unit is a new structure within Tokamak Energy. We want to usher in the HTS era. This is a technical role within the MBU focused on developing and implementing instrumentation and data-acquisition systems to control and monitor a range of cryogenic systems with HTS magnets.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead development of instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems to monitor and control HTS magnets and their associated cryogenic environment.
  • Working with the wider team to design coil testing facilities to ensure prototype magnets can be fully characterised and that we meet the project requirements.
  • Take ownership of HTS magnet and cryostat control systems, from early designs to manufacturing, commissioning of both software and hardware, to handing off to an end user.
  • Create modelling, data acquisition, or data analysis software as required.
  • Design electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and PCBs as required.
  • Specify software requirements and work with external contractors to develop and test software, focusing on on-time delivery of well-tested code.
  • Working with external collaborators as required to develop, test or purchase measurement electronics, sensors and associated instrumentation.
  • Lead safety analysis and safety case preparation for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Interpreting test results and producing clear written reports. Prepare technical reports and specifications.
  • Liaise with project and program managers, as well as external customers, as needed.
  • Mentor and supervise junior engineers or technicians.
Requirements
  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant engineering or physics-based discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience of specifying, developing and contributing to development of complex data acquisition and control software/hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience of designing electrical schematics and printed circuit boards
  • Experience of working with cryogenics, superconducting magnets or other high magnetic field environments.
  • Demonstrated experience of training or mentoring junior engineers or technicians.
  • Experience in working with National Instruments PXI, cRIO or other real-time systems is highly desirable.
  • Experience of working with FPGAs or embedded systems running Linux is desirable.
  • Experience in software programming in any language, ideally C/C++ or LabVIEW.
  • Experience of working with optical instrumentation is desirable.
  • Willingness to work 'hands on' in a laboratory setting
  • High degree of self-organisation, motivation, and commitment to working to defined timescales.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a mixed team of engineers, physicists, designers, and technicians designing innovative and complex devices.
