Would you like the opportunity to oversee the team’s approach to storing, coding and analysing data as it is migrated to Google Cloud Platform?

Do you have strong analytical and coding skills?

Can you build strong working relationships and enjoy working collaboratively across a range of teams internally and externally?

If so, we have a fantastic opportunity for someone looking to be involved in a major Government strategy and we would love to hear from you!

The Department for Transport’s award-winning Transport Statistics team has an exciting and incredibly topical opportunity available to be its statistical lead on Vehicle licensing statistics. The team sits within the Travel and Environment Data and Statistics Division which is embedded within a policy directorate focused on locally managed transport.

In support of its Transport Decarbonisation Strategy and Government plans to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the Department needs an individual who can continue to develop and enhance its statistical evidence base in relation to the UK’s vehicle fleet.
This is with a particular emphasis on electric and zero emission vehicles and as such the team will be twinned with the statistics team responsible for electric vehicle charge points and infrastructure to deliver a joined-up analytical approach towards electric vehicles and their associated infrastructure which will require close collaborative working.

The team also lead on driving and rider testing and Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) evasion statistics.

As the Head of Vehicles Statistics you will be responsible for four Official Statistics series each of which have significant policy, media and senior stakeholder interest and will need to be confident in communicating these statistics to a wide audience.
They will also need to be a strong advocate for the evidence base they oversee, ensuring the correct use of figures in a range of products and briefing, where often there are many competing data sources available You will work collaboratively with colleagues within your own team, other analysts and policy teams across the Department, and with external stakeholders including Other Government Departments, consultants and the public.

This will require you to confidently engage and communicate analysis to both technical and non-technical audiences.

As well as overseeing the existing work and operations within the branch, the post will require the individual to deploy strong analytical and coding skills to review the work and outputs of their team, in conjunction with the wider unit helping to lead, shape and set the future direction to consider how the Department’s growing and evolving analytical needs can be sustainably supported.

This includes reviewing the team’s approach to storing, coding and analysing data, how they produce publications and analysis and scoping options for better linkage with other data.

Responsibilities

Your key duties and responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Managing and leading up to three individuals, providing inspiring, confident, and empowering leadership to the team, ensuring a culture of improvement which values development and maintains a team of engaged, capable and confident colleagues.
  • Overseeing and reviewing the production of Official Statistics publications concerning Vehicle Licensing and Vehicle Excise Duty compliance and the associated tables engaging with policy and other users to ensure these outputs remain relevant and targeted in this fast-moving environment.
  • Working closely with the statistics team responsible for electric vehicle charging infrastructure, to deliver a joined-up analytical approach towards electric vehicles and their associated infrastructure.
  • Working closely with DVLA the main data providers to ensure compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics and manage the supply of data from them.
