Senior Software Engineer (C# .NET)

RCN Cardiff Gate with hybrid working, 35 hours per week, permanent

Salary per annum £47,745 - £53,934*

There is more to the RCN than you might think. We’re a trade union with a membership of over half a million nurses, midwives, nursing support workers and students. We support their practice, represent them, lobby on their behalf, and develop them.
We exist to make a positive difference – to the working lives of our members and ultimately to standards in patient care. Our employees are drawn from many walks of life – we are nurses, marketers and communicators, administrators, IT professionals, policy and finance experts, lawyers… together we are so much more.

We couldn’t do what we do without our people.

We're accredited with Investors in People Silver Standard. Our people are our greatest asset, and we want people who can contribute to our purpose in line with our values.

As a software engineer you’ll use your positive attitude, as you design and develop exceptional software to support our online services. You will also use your excellent communication skills and knowledge to help inspire and encourage new ways of working.

This varied role is responsible for the development and support of the RCN’s services and applications that underpin its website, membership, and business systems. You will be working collaboratively in a supportive team to deliver diverse projects using modern technologies and practices to provide world-class online experiences.

While delivering projects to timeframes you will be given enough time to complete development to a high standard.

As well as exceptional customer service, to join us you’ll need at least two years of experience in developing web-based solutions to meet technical requirements and business objectives. You will be passionate about learning and finding the most elegant solution to complex business requirements.

You will have experience in developing with the .NET platform, as well as working with RESTful web services, APIs, databases, writing unit tests and integrating with third party systems. You’ll understand technologies such as C#, MVC, .NET 8, Azure, DevOps, SQL Server, HTML, CSS, JSON and JavaScript.

You will be familiar with object-orientated programming and how to apply SOLID design principles to web application development as well as having worked in an Agile development environment.

Knowledge working with cloud-native and API-first architectures, Azure, MS SQL Server, Microsoft Power Platform/Dynamics/Dataverse, Sitecore/Umbraco CMS, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, Microsoft Graph, SAML, OAuth, payment processing platforms, and exposure to PHP, are highly desirable but not essential as personal development and support will be provided where necessary.

You will need to show adaptability, reliability, the ability to deliver to timescales and a commitment to collaborative working. You will be an excellent communicator, have an analytical mindset, and a passion for development.

To succeed at the Royal College of Nursing all you need to do is think bigger, better and brighter. And with an attitude like that, anything’s possible.

What we offer you

We expect you to look after our customers. And we expect you to be rewarded for it. We offer an impressive range of benefits, a broad range of learning development opportunities and an award-winning health and wellbeing programme. We offer annual leave up to 32 days plus bank holidays and three additional days for the Christmas break plus generous maternity, adoption, paternity, and shared parental leave packages.

  • We offer a competitive pay structure with annual pay progression until you reach the top of the salary scale. We normally offer new employees the first point of the salary range, although you may be able to negotiate a higher starting salary depending on your skills, experience and current salary.
We are a diverse organisation and understand everyone has different needs and many of our employees enjoy flexible working enabling them to deliver results whilst having a good work life balance. Our hybrid working model allows for up to 60% of your working time to be carried out from home.

At least 40% of your working time will be spent working in person.
