Job overview

Applications are invited for a 10PA Locum Consultant in Paediatric Oncology at Nottingham University Hospitals. This is an initial short-term locum post with the intention of preparing to advertise a substantive post once approved.

Our East Midlands Children’s and Young Person’s Integrated Cancer Service (EMCYPICS) is a two site principle treatment centre for malignant haematology based across Nottingham and Leicester and takes approximately 140 new malignant patients each year.

We are a Tessa Jowell Centre of Excellence for neuro-oncology. The post is Nottingham based, but with links via a shared MDT. Our inpatient unit houses a teenage cancer trust area, adjacent daycare facilities with a theatre room and access to paediatric intensive care on the same corridor.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work as part of the consultant team to provide inpatient care to the oncology and haematology service on a 1 in 6.5 service week basis as well as having specific responsibilities for new referrals with solid tumours and brain tumours and late effects.
The current vacancy is for an oncologist covering solid tumours, brain tumours and late effects but applications from those wishing to cover leukaemia instead of brain tumours will be considered and this may be negotiated with the current team based on the applicant’s specific interests.

We care for patients post autologous stem cell transplant but allogeneic transplants occur in Sheffield. The post is for 10PAs but applications from those wishing to consider job share or more flexible arrangements are also invited.

It is essential that applicants have specific training in paediatric oncology, are fully registered with the GMC with entry to the specialist register for paediatric oncology (or the expectation of award of CCT or CESR within 6 months of interview).

Please refer to the job description for full details. Additional enquiries and visits are very welcome.

Working for our organisation

The successful applicant will become joint the existing friendly and collaborative team of 7 consultant haematologists and oncologists and an additional temporary locum. We have strong links with the University of Nottingham, with two team members having academic appointments.
There are currently 3 consultants covering benign haematology, 3 covering leukaemia, 3 covering neuro oncology and 3 covering solid tumours. The wider paediatric team is very welcoming and sociable and includes general paediatrics, nephrology, rheumatology, metabolic , gastroenterology, intensive care and interests in cardiology.

We have excellent links with paediatric surgery with dedicated theatre time for line insertions and have twice weekly dedicated bone marrow/intrathecal lists. Nottingham and the surrounding area is a hidden gem, being a beautiful yet affordable place to live with outstanding nearby schools and excellent transport links to other major cities.
