The Assistant Healthcare Support Worker (Theatre) is a valued member of the Perioperative Team supporting and promoting high quality, patient centred, compassionate care in the perioperative setting.

You will carry out a range of activities under the guidance and supervision of the Perioperative Team in accordance with the Trust Values and the competencies outlined for the role.

There will be opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills, specific to your needs, Training will be provided to ensure you have the required skills and skill set specific to your area of work. You will also be supported to obtain your care certificate if you do not have this qualification as well as completion of your competencies.

  1. Support the Perioperative Team to implement agreed care plans in accordance with instruction and training received. This includes but is not limited to:

o Ensure the safe transfer of patients to and from the perioperative area

o Assist in the safe moving / positioning of patients, ensuring privacy, dignity and comfort is preserved

o Assist the perioperative team in preparing, promoting, and maintaining the clinical area ensuring it is appropriately resourced to enable the safe and timely delivery of patient care, such as preparing patient trolleys/beds ensuring appropriate clinical equipment is available and in working order.

o Relay messages to other members of the multidisciplinary team to support the safe delivery of care

o To assistant in the transfer of specimens to Pathology, ensuring documentation is completed correctly.

o Moving and handling of equipment as required to support the delivery of care.

o Checking and changing of gas cylinders in accordance with standard operating procedures.

o Management of clinical / non-clinical waste and contaminated instruments sets in accordance with policies.

There are 15 main operating theatres at the Great Western Hospital specialising in a range of inpatient and day surgery procedures.

You would participate in the delivery of high quality care to patients throughout their operative experience, ensuring at all times that utmost regard is given to patient dignity, safety, values, individuality , religion and confidentiality.

GWH is conveniently located just a mile off the M4 (Junction 15), and there is a bus service from the town centre and the station (every 15 minutes). Swindon is the perfect base to explore the Cotswolds, Bristol, Bath and Reading. London is easily accessible by train, bus or car.

  1. Maintain the work environment in line with Trust infection control and patient safety policies
  2. Maintain accurate records relating to communication with patients, relatives, and members of the Multidisciplinary team regarding all aspects of care demonstrating a range of appropriate communication skills.
  3. Ensure theatre systems are utilised and updated to support the delivery of care in the perioperative setting
  4. Ensuring equipment and stores are well maintained, taking appropriate action if the equipment is faulty
  5. Assist in monitoring and maintaining stocks of material and equipment at appropriate levels within the theatre, as delegated by registered practitioners.
  6. Work effectively as part of a team.
  7. Demonstrate ability to access Trust policies and procedures and comply with those relevant to role.
  8. Act, at all times, in a manner which demonstrates respect for privacy, dignity and confidentiality.

  15. To support or guide other members of the perioperative team.
  16. Participate in the induction and orientation of newly appointed staff, learners and other visitors to the department.
  17. Comply with Trust policy regarding information governance and the care of patient property.
  18. Ensure incidents, issues and complaints are reported, following the appropriate Trust / Departmental policies and utilising the appropriate reporting systems / escalations.
Responsibilities for People or Training
  1. Undertake the Trust’s corporate and local induction and maintain your learning and compliance with training requirements for your
  2. Complete mandatory training. This will vary depending on area of work.
  3. Attend In-service Training
  4. Successful completion of the Care Certificate if applicable
