Pastoral and Inclusion Support Lead
About the school
Aston University Mathematics School is one of only a handful of specialist state mathematics schools in England. We opened in September 2025 in partnership with Aston University, and we educate some of the most able young mathematicians in the West Midlands: students who have chosen a demanding A-level programme of Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, and either Chemistry or Computer Science, and who deserve outstanding support to thrive.
We're now looking for a Pastoral and Inclusion Support Lead to join our small, close-knit team.
What the role involves
Our Pastoral and Inclusion Support Lead is the person students go to when they need support, the point of contact for parents and the colleague who keeps attendance, inclusion, and student welfare running smoothly day to day. Working alongside our two Senior Tutors, you will lead the routine pastoral work that lets our students flourish in an academically intense environment — wellbeing check-ins, first-line welfare and mental-health support, attendance follow-up, low-level inclusion profiles, and acting as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead.
This is a deeply relational role. You will spend much of your day in direct contact with students, so the ability to build trust quickly, listen well and know when to escalate is important.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for a team member who will be:
- Exceptionally organised, proactive, and resourceful, with a keen eye for detail
- A calm presence: especially in moments of student distress
- Warm, patient, and genuinely committed to inclusion and to enabling every student to thrive
- A strong communicator, comfortable with students, parents, and colleagues alike
- Confident with MIS databases, Microsoft 365 and accurate record-keeping
Experience in a senior administrative, pastoral, or operational role in a school or similar setting is ideal, though not essential if you bring the right qualities.
What we offer- A genuinely distinctive place to work — a specialist maths school on Aston University's campus, in Birmingham's Innovation Quarter
- A small, supportive staff team where your work is visible and valued
- A workplace where we value the wellbeing of our staff and are committed to ensuring workload and work-life balance are respected
- Term-time only working (40 weeks / 39.5 hours per week) so your holidays are genuinely your own
