Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced professional to lead and manage our Radiopharmacy service at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW). As the Associate Director of Pharmacy, Radiopharmacy, you will oversee the provision of radiopharmaceuticals under an MHRA Specials License, ensuring operational excellence, regulatory compliance, and the strategic development of the service both within the Trust and externally.

To support you in this role you will have a team of highly specialised and dedicated professionals.

The Pharmacy department has large well established clinical teams, working in some areas to a consultant level.

As the Associate Director of Pharmacy, Radiopharmacy, you will provide expert advice to medical consultants and other healthcare and scientific professionals, helping them perform clinical nuclear medicine procedures with accuracy and confidence.

Leading the strategic development of Radiopharmacy services, you will collaborate with commissioners to enhance the quality and sustainability of the service.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide professional leadership and management of the Trust Manufacturing Specials (MS) licensed Radiopharmacy service;
  • Lead and manage the Radiopharmacy team including those named as responsible for (Production and Quality) on the MS licence.
  • Manage the Radiopharmacy service to the Trust and to external clients;
  • Provide expert advice internally and externally to medical consultants and other healthcare and scientific professionals to assist them in the performance of clinical nuclear medicine procedures;
  • Lead the strategic development of Radiopharmacy services within the Trust in collaboration with commissioners of the service;
  • Be responsible for clinical governance and Good Manufacturing Practice of Radiopharmacy provision;
  • Be responsible for the development of strategic plans for the Radiopharmacy service and management to ensure that services provided are responsive and efficient;
  • Be responsible for the delivery of a cost effective service;
  • Provide professional advice to Radiopharmacy customers as requested;
  • Provide specialist expertise in Radiopharmacy across the Trust;
  • Act as a recognised expert on Radiopharmacy internally and externally including at a regional and national level.
  • Provide education and training in Radiopharmacy at a local, regional and national level as requested

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Pharmacy or other appropriate science discipline
  • Registered Healthcare Professional with GPhC/HCPC or Equivalent
  • Post-graduate qualification relevant to the science and practice of radiopharmacy and/or evidence of further training and development in radiopharmacy/aseptic services i.e. PTQA/STP/Postgraduate Qualification in Radiopharmacy/aseptic services
Desirable criteria
  • Leadership qualification(s)
  • Project management qualification
  • Member of RPS/RSC/RSB or equivalent professional body
  • Trained as Radiation Protection Supervisor
  • Able to be named on the MS license for Quality or Production

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience in radiopharmacy/aseptic preparation services
  • Experience and in depth understanding of applicable ICH GCP, the UK Regulations
  • Substantial knowledge of radiation protection
  • Demonstrable experience and skill in staff management and supervision
  • Experience in procedure writing and implementation
  • Experience of purchasing and validating new equipment
  • Project and change management experience
Desirable criteria
  • Releasing Officer current experience for radiopharmaceuticals/aseptic products
  • Experience of developing and delivering education/training/teaching up to and including post graduate level
  • Experience in budget management/financial procedures
  • Experience of setting up a new services

  • Good verbal and written communication skills, able to present ideas and information confidently in a clear and concise manner in individual and group settings, both within the Radiopharmacy team and with service users
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster good working relationships both within the team and with multi-disciplinary service users; and to communicate sensitively but resolutely in difficult or controversial situations
  • Effective organisational and time management skills, including ability to prioritise, plan and organise own workload and that of the team to accommodate both the needs of service users and of the radiopharmacy team
  • Able to work under pressure in a busy and demanding environment
  • Service improvement skills including the ability to collaborate with others to identify changes required, and to lead on implementing changes in own area of practice
  • Computer literate, including ability to manage specialist software systems
