Job overview

We are looking for individuals with experience to work in healthcare, to join the NHS family helping people from your local community.

Under the supervision of a registered nurse you will assist the Ward/Department team in providing the highest possible standard of care for patients. The post holder will undertake a range of tasks and duties as delegated by a Registered Nurse, including Venepuncture & ECG, and recording patient observations for patients attending the Pre-Assessment Clinic.

Monitoring stock levels and ordering as appropriate. Supporting the nursing / admin team as required.

Follow Trust policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.

Promotes effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team and takes measures to overcome communication difficulties.

Be familiar with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents, reporting of incidents and near misses if they occur.

Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff and student learners.

Qualifications & Experience Required

Substantial recent/current experience of working in a healthcare setting

Care Certificate based on the standards set by NHS England, Skills for Care and Skills for Health. This must be gained by working in a vocational capacity (we will not accept an online care certificate).

Be able to demonstrate a good standard of numeracy and literacy.

NVQ Level 2/3 or Diploma in Health is desirable

Main duties of the job

Carry out any movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from your mandatory training

Obtaining specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.

Prepare patients for treatments, investigations or procedures including offering support

General and clinical observations (may be referred to as vital signs) of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff, to include: Recording of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration rate

Oxygen saturation monitoring using saturation monitor.

Undertake blood glucose monitoring, venepuncture and/or cannulation upon the direction of the registered Nurse.

Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.

Safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy.

Undertake a range of clerical duties: Reception/telephone duties.

Information technology / computer skills.

Safeguards the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives.
Identify objectives within a PDP that supports the delivery of high standards of clinical care.

Undertake training and acquire up to date knowledge for undertaking of clinical skills.

  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Health and Social Care gained by working in a vocational capacity or relevant healthcare support work experience
  • Care Certificate standard training gained by working in a vocational capacity - we will not accept an online care certificate
  • Be able to demonstrate basic numeracy and literacy
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of additional developmental courses undertaken relevant to HCSW role

Experience

Essential criteria
  • A significant recent paid experience working in a care environment within the UK (required for completion of NVQ)
  • Understands the role of a Healthcare Support Worker and can evidence this in the application form
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of having supervised a junior colleague
