About the Deputy Chief Legal Officer Role:
A Head of Legal is required to join a local authority in the South East on a temporary basis for a period of 3+ Months following a structural review of the legal structure.
Our client is ideally looking for someone to be the lead on governance matters across the council and provide light touch management across the small team whilst leading on litigation matters on behalf of the council
This role is offered on a hybrid working basis with the expectation of attending the office once per week. Due to the nature of the role, the client would like someone to take on the position on a full-time basis however part-time candidates who can commit to 4 days per week will also be considered.
This role is suitable for a qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Legal Executive with Deputy Monitoring Officer Experience gained within Local Government.
Key Responsibilities of the Deputy Chief Legal Officer Role:
- Deputise for the Associate Director Legal & Democratic Services as the Council's Monitoring Officer
- To effectively manage the Legal Team to ensure the provision of high quality legal advice
- To undertake all litigation work, including preparation of court cases and attendance and representation at hearings
- To act as Legal Adviser to the Licensing Authority
- To research and provide legal advice on a range of legal matters
Required experience/skills:
- Experienced Local Government Solicitor, Barrister or CILEX
- Preferably been a monitoring Officer or Deputy Monitoring Officer
- Managed a team of lawyers at a senior level in local government
- Preferably able to advise on local authority corporate governance issues
