Are you a dynamic leader with a passion for patient safety and quality governance?

We are seeking a Lead Governance Mental Health role (for 9 months as backfill cover) to join our dedicated team for nine months. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact on healthcare delivery and patient outcomes as part of our Nurse Consultant and Patient Safety Network within the Mental Health Division.

This temporary position has arisen from the existing postholder moving up to cover Deputy Director of Governance and Quality for the Mental Health Division. We are a supportive team who endeavour to foster a culture of learning through compassionate leadership.

Main duties of the job

As a Lead for Patient Safety and Quality Governance you will support the Deputy Director in developing, implementing, and supporting strategies to ensure the highest standards of patient care and safety. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to promote a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in healthcare.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Support Deputy Director of Governance and Quality for the Mental Health Division and our teams in complaints, mortality review and incident management such as structured judgement reviews and PSIRF requirements, within set timescales.
  • Support, develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to enhance patient safety and quality of care.
  • Support the Deputy Director in the monitoring and evaluation of patient safety and quality performance metrics, identifying areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Provide guidance and support on patient safety and quality governance matters.
  • Foster a culture of safety, transparency, and continuous improvement throughout the organisation.
  • Contribute to the oversight of patient safety and quality, reporting into relevant Patient Safety, Quality and Performance meetings as agreed by the Clinical Director and supported by the Deputy Director.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The “must haves” for this role:

  • Qualified in a mental health care discipline with significant clinical experience.
  • Experience in patient safety and quality governance, preferably in dedicated governance role.
  • Knowledge of complaint and regulatory requirements, PSIRF, accreditation standards, and best practices in patient safety and quality.
  • Experience of developing and implementing successful patient safety and quality initiatives.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
  • Attention to detail in report writing and critical analysis of mental health care interventions.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Management qualification or equivalent management experience
  • Broad knowledge of the NHS
  • Master’s degree in health/social care or equivalent qualification/experience as well as evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Formal management/leadership qualification DMS, CMS etc. or equivalent experience

Continuous Professional Development

  • Evidence of relevant continual professional development in management

Previous Experience

  • At least 3 years management or clinical leadership experience
  • Experience of implementing change from a national and local health or social care change agenda that impacts across services and professions
  • Experience of managing complex situations concerning safeguarding, risk management and investigations.
