This is an exciting post designed to offer specialist training and experience in Upper GI surgery, for trainees around the time of completion of higher specialist training and looking for some extra training ahead of applying for consultant positions.UHCW is a modern facility with all surgical specialties represented on site. There are excellent educational facilities.
The post holder will occupy a key organisational role in the Upper GI team, which comprises 4 consultants, 5 middle grades, 2 CT grades, 2 FY1s and 5 ACPs. This post allows for development
in skills in all areas of Upper GI surgery, including in major Upper GI cancer resection, laparoscopic upper GI benign work, and bariatrics. There are many opportunities for day case general surgery and upper GI endoscopy lists as well.
UHCW is one of the UK’s busiest Major Trauma Centres and the acute take provides excellent emergency surgical exposure. The successful candidate will participate on the on-call rota as the senior Middle-Grade and will be expected to deal with the majority of an unselected acute General Surgical take.
Main duties of the job
Day to day care of complex Upper GI & Bariatric patients
Attending theatre for training and assisting in all types of Upper GI/General surgery procedures.
Lead in preparation of patients and effective running of Upper GI lists.
Attend MDT meetings and co-ordinate care and list planning for oesophageal and gastric cancer patients
Support outpatient activity of the unit, as required
Perform audit of overall activity of the unit and supervise collection and presentation of mandatory morbidity and mortality data
The post holder will be accountable for improving and complying with infection control practices and independently operate (STU) to support the ‘Hot Gall bladder’ service. Post holder will be able to do Consultant on-call (under supervision) if required to cover sickness.
