(Associate) Technical Director - Mechanical Services

Role Description

As an Associate Technical Director (Mechanical) Building Services Engineer, you will provide technical leadership on complex building services projects within the railway and infrastructure sectors. You will deliver high-quality mechanical design solutions, lead multidisciplinary teams, manage client relationships, and drive innovation to support sustainable, safe, and efficient asset delivery across the project lifecycle.

Role Accountabilities
  • Lead the technical delivery of mechanical and building services engineering projects, ensuring excellence in design, installation, and commissioning.
  • Manage and mentor multidisciplinary teams, fostering professional growth and high performance.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and contractors, promoting Arcadis’ services and securing new business opportunities.
  • Oversee project planning, resourcing, budgeting, and risk management to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to required quality and safety standards.
  • Champion sustainability initiatives including BREEAM compliance and integration of renewable energy systems.
  • Provide technical expertise in ventilation, smoke management, HVAC, public health systems, and sustainable technologies relevant to railway environments.
  • Drive continuous improvement through standardisation, automation, and adoption of digital tools such as 3D BIM and common data environments (e.g., ProjectWise).
  • Promote a positive SHE culture by leading safety initiatives and embedding best practices across teams.
  • Contribute to business development through bid preparation, client presentations, and networking. Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering (BEng/BSc minimum; MEng/MSc preferred).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent professional recognition.
  • Proven track record delivering mechanical/building services projects within railway, infrastructure, or transport sectors.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical design, including tunnel ventilation, smoke management, HVAC systems, and commissioning processes.
  • Experience with sustainability standards such as BREEAM and sustainable design principles.
  • Excellent project and people management skills with experience leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong commercial acumen, including experience managing budgets, proposals, and client relationships.
  • Proficient in digital delivery environments such as BIM (3D modelling), common data environments (ProjectWise), and other engineering software.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage and influence senior clients and project stakeholders.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, multi-project environment with the ability to prioritise and manage competing demands.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally as required.
