Children's Staff Nurse - Emergency Department

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual with plenty of initiative to join our team. If you have an interest in emergency nursing and share our enthusiasm for delivering high standards of care, we have a position for you.

We are looking for Children's Nurses that have previously worked in an emergency setting or have ward based skills looking to gain experience in this dynamic environment.

We are looking for motivated staff to join our friendly department. Although this is fast paced environment, we offer an excellent learning opportunities and support to gain new skills.

Main duties of the job
  • Independently assess, plan, implement and evaluate the nursing care for a defined caseload of patients
  • Assume responsibility for individual clinical areas within the unit
  • Maintain and continually develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice relevant to individual clinical area
  • Contribute to the development of others through supervision, mentoring and teaching
  • Contribute toward the continuing development of professional nursing practice in the Emergency Department
  • To follow trust guidance in regards to safe guarding

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Deliver a patient centred style of practice that reflects and promotes the beliefs and values of professional nursing practice within the Emergency Department
  • Independently assess, deliver and evaluate care to a defined caseload of patients
  • Assume coordinating responsibility for individual clinical areas, proactively resolving problems identified within the individual clinical area
  • Set and maintain standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with Sister / Charge Nurse / Matron / Senior Nursing Team
  • Accurately document and report to other members of the nursing and multidisciplinary team information regarding the care given to patients, communicating changes as they occur
  • Supervise, mentor, support and educate pre-registration nurses, undergraduate nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary team in the clinical practice setting
  • Liaise with other health care professionals with on-going responsibility for patient care
  • Adhere to the code: Standards of conduct, performance and ethics for nurses and midwives (NMC 2008)
  • Demonstrate a commitment to research based practice and clinical excellence. Play an active part in the introduction of research-based change to improve patient centred care
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of accountability, responsibility and duty of care. Support and educate junior staff of the implications for practice

Clinical Practice

Essential criteria
  • Articulate and knowledgeable of skills needed to deliver a high standard of care in the area of practice.
  • Able to work under own initiative within boundaries of role
  • Demonstrates awareness of importance of working as part of a team.
  • Able to document observations, results, decisions and actions etc. effectively in patient’s notes and communicate these effectively to appropriate members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients/relatives and carers and all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to proactively contribute to the education of learners and non-registered and less experienced staff.
Desirable criteria
  • Competent to administer intravenous medicines
  • Competent in central venous access management

Education, training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (Part 1. 8. 12 or 15 of register depending on area of practice).
  • UK recognised Degree in Nursing relevant to post
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of an ongoing NMC revalidation.
Desirable criteria
  • Hold a recognised NMC qualification in teaching and mentoring.
  • Post-graduate qualification related to an area of practice.
  • Evidence of achievement on a Nursing and Midwifery, (NMC) approved Mentorship qualification.
