A vacancy has arisen for a Healthcare Science Assistants in Blood Sciences Specimen Reception at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.

You will be joining a busy team providing an essential Blood Sciences service for patients in the North Lancashire and South Cumbria area.

The vacancy is 34hrs per week. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 1pm till 9pm with a 30 minutes unpaid break and Tuesday 5pm till 9pm.

Main duties of the job

This is an interesting and challenging position and offers the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to patient care. Your primary role will be in the Specimen Reception expediting the processing of specimens that require analysis within a short time frame.

You must be reliable and able to work under pressure to extremely high standards.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Person specification

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • 3 GCSE’s or equivalent including English
  • Good General Education
Desirable criteria
  • A’ Levels or equivalent
  • NVQ 2 in clinical laboratory support

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Commitment to undertake relevant departmental training programme/s
Desirable criteria
  • Laboratory skills
  • Previous Pathology reception experience

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Computer/keyboard skills
  • Awareness of H&S issues
  • Awareness of confidentiality issues
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of team working skills
