JOB SUMMARY

The library provides a multidisciplinary library and information service to staff of North London NHS Foundation Trust & Medical students from UCL Medical School & St George’s Medical School, Grenada. We are looking for a motivated Librarian professional to manage the delivery of NLFT's library services across the Trust.

As the main point of contact for Library services delivery in the Trust, the post holder will support the provision of Knowledge and Library services at NLFT which includes the line management of the Librarians and Library Assistants on each site.

The post holder will work closely with other services and trust colleagues to support and promote evidence-based health care and Knowledge Management.

Main duties of the job

PURPOSE OF POST

Accountable to the Head of Medical Education, the post holder will:

  • Be responsible for the daily management and development of the St Ann’s Library and outreach services delivered across the Trust.
  • Play a major role in developing a high quality, Library, and Information service in line with the Trust’s vision and values and in accordance with the vision laid out in the Knowledge for Healthcare Framework supporting evidence-based practice and life-long learning by delivering the right information at the time and place of need.
  • To be responsible for the compliance of the Quality Improvement Outcomes Framework, related reports, and developmental plans.
  • Lead in the marketing and promotion of Library and information resources and services to all existing and potential users
  • Line manage Library staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES
  • Manage the day to day running of the library premises and facilities. Deal with staff and user concerns and complaints, problem solving as required. Ensure any faults regarding premises, equipment or software are dealt with effectively.
  • Manage the daily workload of Library staff to ensure the provision of circulation, inter-library loans, journals, and registration services.
  • Manage, appraise, train and update library staff in using existing and new electronic resources to provide an efficient and effective service.
  • Support the development of Library staff in line with service objectives and delivery through annual appraisals, personal development plans and reviews.
  • Following discussion with other staff, develop work practices and policies to ensure smooth/efficient running of Library service.
  • Plan and organise complex activities to develop the service. For example, the postholder will have the ability to project manage a library relocation within agreed timescales.
  • The workload is largely autonomous requiring the postholder to set own priorities to complete weekly, monthly, or quarterly work cycles and to meet deadlines.
  • Participate in the recruitment and training of new staff, following Trust protocol and procedures.

  • Graduate or postgraduate qualification in librarianship or information science
  • Chartered member or working towards chartered status of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals
  • Experience of working in a library or information unit  Wide experience of using information technology in a library or information context  Knowledge of current trends and NHS initiatives  Experience of developing web based materials  Staff Management  Budget Management
  • Good staff management skills  Extensive knowledge of IT web, healthcare databases and literature searching skills including critical appraisal  Excellent information technology skills  Experience of cataloguing preferably within an NHS or related library environment  Competent and confident in the use of general software applications including email, Internet and Microsoft Office applications  Willingness to continue to improve their knowledge of computers  Skilled in use of new technologies including RSS feeds, wikis, blogs and other web 2.0 technologies  Skilled in the use of a Library Management System  Knowledge of relevant legislation e.g. copyright Act, Equality and Diversity and Data Protection  Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills including influencing and relationship building  Presentation and public speaking skills
