An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Urology team as a Endo-Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist. You will be based in Freedom Unit and working hours are Monday - Friday, with one agreed day off in the week.

Applicants must be a registered nurse with relevant post registration demonstrable experience. Surgical/urology demonstrable experience is required for this post.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a skilled, practitioner as part of the urological multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality care to patients with requiring lithotripsy and metabolic support. The post holder will work across departmental and professional boundaries, encouraging inter-disciplinary working for the benefit of improved patient outcomes and efficient use of resources.

Under indirect supervision of the Clinical Lead assess, plan, implement and evaluate expert nursing care and provide support for this patient group. The post holder will have continuing responsibility for the co-ordination and organisation of individual treatment programmes throughout their treatment.

Provide specialist nursing advice to patients, carers, and health care professionals.

Acts as a resource, and contributes to the education and training of other health care professionals as required.

Contributes to service development, audit and research projects and helps develops educational packages according to organisational requirements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • · To provide and receive highly complex sensitive information through specialist nursing care, education and advice to patients, their carers and healthcare professionals, for stone disease services through formulation of treatment pathways and conservative management that meet the specific needs of individual patients
  • To utilise highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and experience relevant to own practice to deliver a range of job responsibilities in a safe, effective, competent and confident manner, across the range of clinical nurse specialist policies, procedures and practices within the field of stones disease
  • Make sound decisions, which are ethically based in the interests of the patients and clients in the absence of protocols
  • Act under indirect supervision of the Clinical Lead for stone disease using current guidelines to plan and implement individualised treatment.
  • Manages own caseload of patients whilst working as part of the Urological Multidisciplinary team, liaising with general practitioners where necessary to obtain or provide patient information relevant to their care and treatment
  • Provide patient assessments, organising appropriate diagnostic tests, different modalities of imaging and investigations, and interpretation of these for treatment for stone disease in a timely manner in a nurse led clinic

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Significant demonstrable experience in urology and surgery, preferably some demonstrable experience at a Junior sister level
  • • Proven knowledge of relevant NICE guidelines
  • • Demonstrable experience as an independent practitioner and ability to work independently and run nurse led clinics
  • • Demonstrable experience in verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • • Demonstrable experience in planning and delivering education sessions for both patients and staff
Desirable criteria
  • • Demonstrable experience in shockwave lithotripsy and stones
  • • A masters level qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • NMC registration.
  • • Degree in Nursing or health related studies/ equivalent demonstrable experience
Desirable criteria
  • • A masters level qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience
  • • Independent and supplementary Non-medical prescribing qualification

Aptitude & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • • Advanced communication skills, written and verbal, with ability to demonstrate fluency, clarity and effectiveness at all levels
  • • Ability to assess patients and recommend appropriate treatment plans. Patient records maintained to reflect updated treatment plans
Desirable criteria
  • • Ability / demonstrable experience of – Directing and instructing others
  • • Teaching and mentoring skills.
