Job overview

This is a replacement post as a member of The Christie Colorectal and Peritoneal Oncology Centre (CPOC). The role will predominately be to support the increasing referral and operative activity in the Peritoneal Tumour Service and the Anal Cancer Service.

It requires a dedicated individual interested in peritoneal surface malignancy and the complex surgery that this entails. Pivotal to the role would be excellent ability in multidisciplinary engagement with good communication skills to discuss the details of diagnosis, complex surgical issues, and subsequent management.

Main duties of the job

This post is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week to support peritoneal and anal cancer (including Anoscopy) surgery at The Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join the Colorectal and Peritoneal Oncology Centre (CPOC) and join the eight remaining colorectal surgeons in treating patients as part of the National Highly Specialised Service for Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) and Colorectal Peritoneal Metastases (CRPM).

This post will support the increasing referral and operative activity seen in these two services.

Whilst some previous experience in peritoneal and anal cancer surgery is preferred, this is not mandatory. Support and mentorship will be given to the successful candidate for development of the skills needed to undertake peritoneal surgery. Training will be provided in the undertaking of Anoscopy

The successful candidate will also join the existing colorectal consultants in providing support to other surgical specialties for multivisceral operations.

Working for our organisation

The CPOC team includes nine Colorectal and Peritoneal Consultants, five Clinical Fellows including a Royal College / ACPGBI Advanced Colorectal Cancer fellow, two international fellows, and a Northwest Deanery Trainee. We are supported by a team of four Clinical Nurse Specialists as well as an administration team.
We are a friendly, hard-working team focused on delivering high quality patient-centred care. The service is a national referral service with three MDTs each week where all new referrals are discussed. The service is consultant led with daily consultant ward rounds undertaken in rotation.
A system is in place with job planned consultant Colorectal, Urology, and Gynaecology support for operating lists to facilitate the complex nature of the surgery. Quarterly Morbidity and Mortality meetings are undertaken to review all complications.

The service prides itself in its low complication figures for the major surgeries undertaken.

We are an ESSO accredited training centre for peritoneal surface malignancy. We provide mentorship for trainees undertaking the ESSO/EPSO fellowship in peritoneal surgery.

Emergency cover is provided by the colorectal on-call consultant which the successful appointment will be part of. This covers inpatient surgical and oncology patients including those presenting through the Acute Oncology Assessment Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role will support the PTS activity of CPOC with a focus on the management of Peritoneal Surface Malignancy. The successful candidate will work with the existing consultants to deliver the nationally commissioned services for appendiceal neoplasia and colorectal peritoneal disease.
They will also join the existing consultants in supporting the Gynaecology Oncology Consultant Surgeons in the management of ovarian peritoneal disease. The successful candidate will join the existing colorectal consultants in providing support to other surgical specialties for multivisceral operations.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and is a full-time appointment.

To support the activity of the Peritoneal Tumour Service, it is expected that the successful applicant will undertake inpatient and outpatient activity and operating as part of service delivery for The Colorectal and Peritoneal Oncology Centre.

Endoscopy activity will be available (but is not required) if the successful candidate wants to undertake this. If so, the successful candidate would need to demonstrate full JAG accreditation.

Minimal access surgery, including robotic surgery, and an enhanced recovery programme are established and the successful applicant will work in conjunction with the rest of the team to make use of the comprehensive facilities to deliver efficient and effective colorectal and peritoneal surgery.

The appointee will be given equal access to the trainee medical staff and the clinical nurse practitioners who work in the unit. Because of the organisation of the unit’s activities, no one trainee is assigned to an individual consultant, but trainees are allocated for a block of time and rotate through consultant teams.

The unit activities are agreed prospectively at a weekly diary meeting and flexibility is expected across the team to allow mutual goals for training and service to be achieved.
