Job overview

The consultant post in Newton is an inpatient rehabilitation psychiatry consultant post working into a level 2 male High Dependency Unit of 19 beds. The patients are generally with complex psychosis with multiple comorbidities and deficits who get the support of an extensive multidisciplinary team including psychologists, OTs, Speech and language therapists, specialist nurses, etc.The consultant will be supported by a SAS grade doctor and resident doctor and will work alongside other consultant psychiatrists working into the rehabilitation services.
As an added bonus, the Trust is located in the Northeast of England and Cumbria which is an area of outstanding natural beauty, containing national parks, ancient heritage sites and major cities supported by excellent national and international transport links.The area is predominantly rural and contains the Lake District National Park which is considered one of England’s finest areas of natural beauty.

Main duties of the job
The consultant psychiatrist will offer medical leadership in the assessment, care and treatment of patients with complex psychosis who have been admitted to the HDU with the multidisciplinary team.
The consultant will be able to offer psychopharmacological interventions for treatment resistant symptoms, help provide psychological interventions as required with the multidisciplinary team, formulate and provide care and treatment plans to address deficits in functioning and address and treat comorbidities that patients present with.
They will help address physical healthcare needs with the medical team and with local acute hospital trusts.
They will be able offer leadership for the multidisciplinary team and work towards trust goals and priorities. They will engage with patients offering patient centred care and treatment and work with patients and carers towards patient centred recovery goals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Applicants should be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the point of interview. Candidates should be suitably qualified, including eligibility for Section 12 approval and Approved Clinician status.
This post is advertised as full time however we would welcome applications from candidates interested in this role on a part time basis working a minimum of 6 PA’s per week’

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria- MBBS (or equivalent)
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
- Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
- Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
- Approved Clinician Status
- Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
- Has undergone training in educational supervision
- Has undergone training in appraisal
Knowledge
Essential criteria- Up to date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry
- Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation
- An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies
Experience
Essential criteria- Experience of multidisciplinary team working
- Wide clinical experience in general adult psychiatry in different clinical settings
- Experience of Clinical Audit
- Experience of inpatient services for people with severe mental illness
- Experience in multiagency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
- Experience in service management or development
Skills
Essential criteria- High level of clinical skills
- Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders in Adult Psychiatry
- Excellent communication skills
