An exciting opportunity has become available within the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) department in LCL for a HCPC registered BMS to come join our team.

We are looking for applicants with clinical laboratory experience in H&I to participate in the activities of the department. The successful candidate will be required to undertake the duties of an experienced, registered Biomedical Scientist in performing a comprehensive range of analyses and to take appropriate action on the results obtained.

They will be expected to maintain highly complex analytical equipment in optimum operational condition and to utilise necessary interpersonal skills to ensure effective liaison with service users and to provide the best care for the patient.

The post holder will be required to develop competence and confidence in order to perform these procedures autonomously.

The post holder will also be expected to take part in the on-call service during evenings and weekends.

The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in the H&I discipline and will be expected ti participate in H&I specific CPD.

All specimens will be processed for screening, diagnostic and clinical management of patients using correct techniques as well as complex, specialised equipment.

Along with the operation maintenance and calibration of specialist automated equipment, the BMS will be expected to apply the level of manual dexterity needed for the processing of pathological specimens for manual DNA extraction and specialised techniques.

There may be times when the BMS will be required to supervise, organise and allocate work and/or train less experienced staff in own area, along with training of new staff in MLA, AP and BMS procedures and protocols within the laboratory.

Develop the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform specialised investigations / procedures during rotation through the highly specialised laboratory sections associated with Clinical Immunology.

Maintain the knowledge and expertise necessary to perform specialised procedures.

Maintain State Registration with the Health Professions Council

Conform to the HPC Code of Conduct for Biomedical Scientists and to maintain CPD.

Ensure compliance with departmental Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which reflect local and national standards of work practice

Explain to service users contentious issues that conflict with laboratory service targets.

Report results to clinicians and other service users in accordance with SOPs.

Explain technical issues relating to results to clinicians and other service users.

Provide advice to clinicians and other service users regarding specimen types, timing of collection of specimen and turnaround times.

Assess the suitability and appropriateness of samples submitted to the laboratory and to take remedial action when required.

Analyse specimens for screening, diagnostic and clinical management of patients using complex, specialised and very expensive equipment.

Interpret technical validity of results, which may be anomalous, incomplete, complex or conflicting, using professional knowledge and experience.
